I'm gonna put on my Imagineer hat for a moment...
I love Hollywood Studios - it's one of my favorite parks at Disney. So, it breaks my heart to see the construction and how far it's fallen - but I'm hopeful. Yes, right now it has three major rides and not a ton to do outside of those (unless you like the shows.) DHS is a park in transition. There's been countless rumors of Star Wars land or Cars Land, the hat is gone and the theater is back as the landmark, and there's a ton of empty space.
So how do we fix it?
I had a few ideas.
First of all, I like the idea of expanding the Pixar area. I was watching Monsters Inc. this weekend (woke up and it was on) and I had an idea. There's something really cool about the door scene in Monsters Inc. when they're trying to get Boo back to her door. I could really see them making a Peter Pan-esque ride (single track.) Instead of flying around Neverland, you'd be smack in the middle of the door scene - flying through doors and areas - like the beach scene or the trailer - trying to get away from Randall. This could be such a simple, yet cool ride.
Next..
What bothers me so much about DHS is that it used to be one big working stage. Every inch of the park felt like you were right in the middle of a working set. I think the Star Wars area is awesome, but outside of the Osborne Lights, the motor show and the streets of NY are a real waste.
First - I'd love to see a stage show. They have Beauty and the Beast, but I'd love to see a rotation of famous movies or Broadway shows. I know they have Lion King in Animal Kingdom, but imagine if one year they have Beauty and the Beast and the next an abbreviated Frozen.. then the next year they do Toy Story and so on... That's something that could keep people coming back.
As for the Streets of NY - there's so much they could do here that could make it cool.
First idea - they should have a show where they bring in directors or producers who hold workshops. They could show you how they use backdrops in movies and maybe put you right in the middle of a famous NY movie scene! Imagine having a real Disney or Hollywood director come in and speak to a group of guests and teach them how Hollywood uses the sets and fake streets to create some of your favorite movies. Then, just like the Backlot tour, they will film that scene with a few lucky guests!
Another idea - similar to the Osborne lights - have exhibits at the Streets of NY and SF. Have a graffiti artist come in and go crazy on the streets of NY, or something cool like that. Imagine a really cool graffiti mural in NY for 6 months or something. Just an idea
And last - have the area themed to the season. Install some sprinklers in the fire hydrants during the summer. Create the idea of a hot NY street in the 1940s when people relied on breaking fire hydrants to cool down.
Just some ideas. Do you agree? If you were an Imagineer, how would you fix the parks?
