ID tags for kids

If you put an ID on your kids in case they get lost, what info. do you put on the tag? I was thinking of putting my name (or my child's name? Which would you use?) and my cell phone #. Is there anything else that should go on an ID tag? I am traveling alone with my kids and they will have the ID attached to their lanyard in case they get lost. That way, a CM can call me on my cell phone and we can be reunited right away.

Ds has a speech disorder and if he gets lost and upset, few people would understand him if he needs to ask for help. It's important that he has some sort of ID on him with my contact information.

IMO (although you'll get differing viewpoints), especially because of your ds's speech issues, I'd say the more info the better. Last year I made nametags with my kids' names (full) - dh and my names, cell phone number, hometown and Disney resort name. I just printed out the info on a printer, added some mickey stickers and laminated them. Stuck a pin through and had my nametags (if you do this make sure to round the edges - laminated corners are SHARP).

Some will tell you not to let others know your kids names, but I know that anyone standing near us for about one minute will hear me calling to them and know the names anyway- I don't keep them a secret. So, I don't have a problem with it and would much rather that a CM know all their information in case they are lost.

We take actual luggage tags (the extra ones that AAA sends) and write each child's name, parents names, and cell phone numbers on the card that slips inside the tag. Then on the back of the card we write "For more information about this child, please refer to the other side of this card". Then we put the little card in the luggage tags backwards so that the name is not visible- just the "for more information message". Then I string the tag thru a belt loop in the back (or on the strap of her overalls). This way if my child is lost, a CM can easily find information about her, but I'm not advertising it to the world.

Thank you for the ideas. I bought pin trading lanyards and I am going to get "dog tags" engraved before we leave home. They will wear their tag on their lanyard. Ds likes elastic shorts with Tevas and there is nothing on his clothes to attach ID to, which is why I'm going the lanyard route. I will add a couple of pins to the lanyards so they can trade and will want to wear their lanyards every day.

The ID info. will be there, but it will be small for others to read unless they show it to someone in an emergency. I like the idea of having it engraved, and that way it won't get ruined if it gets wet on a ride or in the rain. I certainly hope my kids don't get lost, but I'd rather be safe than sorry if they do. Ds is my older child, but he would have a more difficult time telling someone that he is lost and asking for help.

Another idea that we are planning to use is "Who's Shoes" id's. They are available online at www.whosshoesid.com. They velcro on shoe laces or around part of a sandal. Have a great trip.

My daughter loves beaded necklaces. I bought a kit with alphabet beads and a ball chain (like a fan pull or drain thing) and and extra bag of numbers. She knows her name and ours very well, so I have put on it the name of our resort, and the cell phone number we will have with us. She will wear it under her shirt. She can make other necklaces & braclets with it after the trip.
I also made one for my co-worker on this board as she checks out the day before we check in at Disney. Her son won't want to play with bead necklaces after the trip, so if it doesn't get lost, or become a souvenir, she can return the beads to me.

My ds4 wears a medical ID bracelet all the time that has his name, allergy and necessary medications. When we go to WDW, I plan on buying each child one of the cheap silicone bracelets and just writing my cell phone number on the inside that they can show to a cast member (or any adult for that matter) if they get lost.

In the past I've used a family photo that I wrote our last name and cell # on the back and then laminated. The kids could say "I with these people". Thankfully I've never had to use it. I did the picture thing, too, and it could be a great idea if there are speech issues due to either age or a disorder.

I got one of those luggage tags that you can see through on both sides. One side had my name, my celphone number (with instructions to leave a message because when I am out of my home range, sometimes it doens't ring, but will immediately tell me there's a message - I didn't want them to give up on it, lol), and our hotel info. On the other side, I put in a recent picture of DD and I together. I thought that would be the fastest way for a CM to identify me as really belonging to DD when I showed up to claim her.

The last time I checked in at a WDW hotel, the front desk directly asked me for my cell phone number in case DD and I got separated. They said that if the child knows which hotel they are staying at (or it's on their ID) but not your cell phone number, the CM will call the hotel, who will call your cell phone to tell you where your child is.

Another tip is to take a picture of your child every morning before you leave for the parks. This will help to identify what they were wearing if they get lost.

Tip if the child is old enough put it on their ankle if you can cover it with socks. You can put more information without anyone seeing as long as they know to show it to a cast member.

Hotel name, childs name and contact person someone from home if you do't have a cell. Say Granny? Any allergies and/or medical problems. CM could call Granny to comfort on phone the child until parents are located. Granny may be able to get more out of the child about the location when they last saw mom or dad.

Hoosier Mom, ours is for our 20M son and 5 year old son, just because they come 2 in a pack. I figure it's one thing that 20M will leave on/alone! Hope we don't need to use them.
