My sister told me yesterday to try Delsym cough medicine. It's suppose to work for 12 hours.Well it lasted for a few hours last night and then I coughed my head off the rest of the night.I did not get much sleep. Can someone suggest another over-the-counter cough medicine that might work?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.I really need some relief!

Mucinex.

It's in a pill form, I can't stomach the taste of cough syrup - so it's a lifesaver for me.

Also if you can get a drs appointment - ask for cough syrup with codine (sp?) it actually lets you get some sleep!!

Hope you feel better:flower3:

Thanks PrincessPatty.I'll definitely try the Mucinex.I can't take anything with codine.I'm allergic to the stuff.

I am usually coughing because of post nasal drip. When I can't get anything else to work, I use Afrin nasal spray for a couple nights and that usually helps me get it calmed down enough to rest.

 Sorry you feel yucky.

Thanks littleteapot.Mmmm.A nasal spray? I would have never thought about that but it's certainly worth a try!

Another Mucinex user here. That stuff is awesome.

I'd better stock up on it myself. I've had students coughing up their lungs on me for the past couple of days. I tried to wash my hands as much as possible, but you know it's never enough.

I put vicks on me and my kids feet at night to stop the coughing. I love it and I dont get that drugged feeling when I take too much medicine

both my kids had terrible coughs last week-while the cough syrup worked o.k. the cool mist humidifier was the best help:thumbsup2

Bronchitis and pneumonia are running rampant. I suggest a trip to the dr's office. The only cough medicine that works for me is Nyquill.

I just think it's really interesting how different people have such varied responses to medications. I swear by Delsym -- it's the only thing that quiets my kids' coughs. Although I've never tried Mucinex. Haven't needed to because Delsym works so well for us...better than any prescription.

Best of luck to you. I hate not being able to get a good night's sleep when I need it most!

Another vote for Mucinex here. Every time I've had an Upper Respiratory Infection, Bronchitis, or Pneumonia, my dr. has recommended I take it. It's worked wonders for me.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. My sister also swears by Delsym. She said it stops the cough all night long. But it did not work for me.I'm going to try a few more suggestions and if it doesn't work it looks like I'll have to take that trip to the Dr's office after all.I really wanted to save myself a hundred bucks.I don't have insurance.
My grandmother used to fix an old fashioned recipe for coughs:Honey,Bourbon and Lemon.
I'm just afraid I wouldn't be able to stop at 2 teaspoons.

:rotfl: It might not stop your cough, but at least you won't care so much!

I think it all depends what kind of cough you're dealing with.

A tight chest where you can't get a good deep breath without coughing = an albuterol inhaler. It's a prescription but very cheap (usually under $5) and worth the hassle of a doctor's visit.

If your cough is more productive, coughing up thick mucus, then you need meds to help break up that mucus so you can get it out of your lungs.

If your cough is just a dry hacking non-mucusy cough, then Delsym may be the answer.

Hope this helps and you find relief soon!

Well it's hard to say what kind of cough I'm dealing with.I don't have much mucus coming up when I cough.I just keep couging and coughing....And sorry to say Delsym does not help my cough at all.My throat is really sore and my chest is tired from all the coughing.
Thanks.

You really need to see a doctor. A $100 now is better then $10,000 later when you end up in the hospital. Just make sure your dr knows you don't have insurance and can you get samples of whatever he gives you (assuming pneumonia and antibiotics). All the cough medicine in the world isn't going to help if you have pneumonia or severe bronchitis.

That is the exact same cough I had a couple of weeks ago. A dry deep cough that would not stop until I gagged myself. I actually ended up pulling the muscles in my chest. It was not pretty. Delsym which usually works like a charm for me could not put a dent in this cough. I ended up going to the Dr and getting a prescription for Tessalon pearls and codiene cough syrup. I know you said you can't take the codiene, but the Tessalon pearls were AWESOME! But they require a dr's script.

Try the mentholatum on your feet. Rub it in on the arch of the bottom of your feet and put on a pair of socks, sit in a comfy chair and sip on a good ol' hot toddy. ( I make DH's a little STRONG and it helps his snoring too!)

My DP has had this for going on 3 weeks now. She had been miserable every night, and had tried ever imaginable OTC remedy. (Vicks on the feet, Mucinex, Robitussen, Nyquil, etc...) The best she got was about 4 hours of sleep, then up the rest of the night hacking away...(which usually means I'm up for the rest of the night too...:sad2: )

So she finally got ahold of her doc on Tuesday and got a prescription for Robitussen w/codiene...She's sleeping better now for the most part.

Good luck, and I hope you get some relief soon! :grouphug:
