If you start training on a treadmill, start transitioning to a slight increase in incline. Once you've been consistent for a couple of weeks, bump the incline to .5 and then 1 and maybe 1.5. This will better acclimate you for when you transition outside where you will deal with more resistance on that road as opposed to a treadmill. Also the slight incline helps with preventing shin splints if you are prone to that.
Good Luck!
Good to know about the shin splints.. I didn't know that would help. I am also wanting to participate in this for 2012. As for 2011, I'm thinking Expedition Everest--I should be ready by then. Started John/Jenny's program mid October. Took a two week break (darn bronchitis) and am back on tomorrow. If I can do this, anyone can. I have asthma but keep at it!! I have never ran/jogged in my life and find it addicting.
