DGD will be 2 on our trip in Sept. I am not planning on getting her a meal as she eats like a bird, but will they bring and extra empty plate. I don't know how this works. There will be 4 adults so plenty to share with her but I am wondering if they bring a plate or if you are charged for an extra plate?

It depend on the restaurant. Most will not charge.
You can't do it at a buffet.

We got a plate everywhere we went last year for my then 2 year old. Nobody ever charged or even questioned it. When we ate at Akershus in Norway, I asked for an extra plate and the server insisted on bringing her her own meal as a 'refill' from one of the other kids meal. (I did not know you could get a refill on the meal that you ordered there in the first place! We didn't need any because there was so much food, but it was nice to know.). We never got charged for a buffet either... I think that once you hit that magical age of free that it would be different.

I'm not understanding the PPs' comments on the buffets. She can definitely eat for free at any buffet and all you care to eat place. At the a la carte places, you can ask for a clean plate, so you can share with her from your own plate. They won't charge you for a clean plate for a child under 3. Now, if you order anything for her (a kid's meal or something), you will have to pay for what you order.

I thought she meant her child was over 2....the way she worded the question (or at least how I read it).

So Allison is correct....a 2 yr old can eat off anyone's plate since you can't purchase a meal plan (or ticket) for them.

She won't be charged. You can even go through the buffet with a 2 year old, and they can eat something, but will not be charged.

As long as she is under 3, she's "free" at Disney. If you specifically order something, you'll pay for that (like a cup of milk at a counter service place, or a kids' meal or something).

Don't worry, and have fun! They grow up too fast; I remember when my daughter was 2 at Disney, seems like it wasn't that long ago!

You will definitely not have to worry about getting extra plates for the 2yr old, nor having to pay for her to eat off the buffet. In fact, it was actually my strategy when I had two under two during a past trip. We did most buffets. Now I do know that any extras will cost, say you are asking for an additional side of fries or an extra beverage, but I've even read Dis' ers getting those type of orders on the house too as long as it was to feed an under 3yr old guest. I even recall Akershus letting me order a complete child's meal, free of charge, for my then 2yr old. I just wouldn't expect it as YMMV in many of those circumstances.

All the table service restaurants also included a glass of milk for my 1 1/2 year old free of charge when we went last year. They don't have to do it, but we lucked out. A couple gave him a scoop of ice cream as well without charging us.

Definitely no problem getting an extra plate anywhere. When DS was 2, just about every TS restaurant gave him a free cup of milk and several insisted upon giving him a whole kids meal for free. And of course at buffets they can eat as much as they want, either off your plate or their own, for no charge.
