I Told You Driving Was Bad For Your Health! *2/2* NEW TRIP REPORT LINK P102

Wow, amazing pics of Savannah! Another place I need to get back to. I was stationed in Augusta, GA for almost a year but was so broke I didn't really get out and see much.

Jill in CO

I enjoyed your pictures of Savannah. We were there in 1998 and the place is looking a lot better now. We drove down from Hilton Head for the day, just like you did.

It was funny that you had posted a picture of shrimp and grits. I was telling my DH today about some of the food selections people were talking about at Food and Wine, and how people seemed to like shrimp and grits. We just don't have grits here in the Midwest. And to put shrimp and grits together just seems really odd. He said he would never eat them. I just might shock him, though, and try them if I get a chance. ;)

WOW! I have some of the same pictures coming up in my TR!! HA! I think I'm still a day away from our day in Savannah though. It's cool to see stuff I remember and "know" when it's not WDW!

Sorry about the TA job thing. You never know, it maybe just isn't your "time". Could happen later on, right?

Glad Denny did okay with all the walking and those stairs! I totally remember being breathless from them!

Such pretty pictures! Savannah is so picturesque!

AWESOME photos! I just spent quite a bit of time "exploring" Savannah! Wow! How beautiful it is. Thanks for sharing. :thumbsup2

I'm so glad you like the pictures. I have lived all my life in the Northeast/Midatlantic region and the south is SO different - especially Savannah. It is such a cool town. I could totally live there.

Your food looked so yummy too! And the name of that ice-cream place made me laugh - Leopold is such an old Austrian name! Well done trying something like tha and your choice sounds great.

My lunch was delish. Just perfect.

I did not know that about the name Leopold. Interesting. It was a very cool little ice cream place. Glad we stopped there. I bet they go all out on their 100th year celebration.

And your cruise! I did read that you were doing a double dip, but I didn't catch that it was actually a 4 nighter and that Ellen is on the same cruise. You are in for a treat! First - Ellen and then two days in paradise. Make sure you head to Serenity Bay - it is beautiful out there (and the barbeque station never gets as crowded as Cookies!)

I never realized that they had 4 night double dips, so I am totally psyched about that, especially since I was able to get the same cabin category for the same price. And getting to hang out with Ellen is going to be really so much fun. I really can't wait. Now I wish it was this year, but I'll be patient.

And ...... sorry for being MIA for quite a while, but once my vacation started I needed to get my plans for our summer trip all settled, on paper and then organized. I do a little binder with all our plans, hotel addresses and confirmation numbers and given that we are travelling for 33 days my binder got quite thick. AND, the other thing that kept me occupied was getting my homepage updated. I was still lightyears behind on posting our summer 2012 trip there and I wanted that done before we left.

33 day vacation? OMG - I am SO jealous. I can't even imagine how amazing that is going to be. I would need a giant organizer as well. I hope you are enjoying your summer and I'm sure you can't wait until your vacation begins. That is going to be one fun TR!

Now to update here on the DIS again. ;)

Yeah! :thumbsup2

Gorgeous pictures. I'm just taking it all in. How was the weather? I get cranky when it's hot and I'm out walking. Wondering if this is something I need to plan for. As of right now I'm booked at AKL for my birthday next March, but I've been seriously considering HHI.

The weather was actually perfect for that type of walking. It was an unseasonably long winter (just like up here) and I think it was one of the first really nice weeks. I want to say it was in the 70's. Definitely not too hot. I think March would be perfect as well. The end of October actually saw temps into the 80's and I remember being just a little warm in the afternoon when I toured with my GF's.

Homemade fresh ice cream is the best! popcorn::

It was SO good!

So glad Denny had no problems with the stairs and the morning in general.

He did fine. And it was good for him to get out and about. He was still in shock, I think.

Lunch looks absolutely delicious.

It WAS! OMG! I could eat that every day!

Nice pictures around Savannah. The food looked great!

Savannah was wonderful. I knew we HAD to go for a visit before we left to go home. And the food was really fabulous. Loved every bite!

I'm glad that Denny was able to join you, and didn't have any issues.

We wouldn't have dreamed of leaving him at home. I just think about what would have happened if we had tried to do that BEFORE the stent. OMG! It was a bit too much walking probably, but he kept saying he was fine so we kept going.

Mary Ellen, when you play catch up you don't waste any time, girl!! :thumbsup2

Sorry I haven't been by sooner, last I looked you hadn't posted your second update so I wanted to wait it out a bit until you had some time to post some. :upsidedow

Welcome back Camille!

I have been trying to update once a week. That's about the best I can do right now. I'm just staying on track with my updates and keeping up with everyone else's TRs. I always have a hard time starting back up after getting back from vacation!

Wow! I've learned so much from your posts about Denny's heart issues, I worry about hubby's heart health and always wonder what signs to watch out for. He runs a few times a week, but he's not watching his weight or what he eats. I know even with the healthiest of people that heart issues can still exist if genes play a factor. :scared: Scary stuff. Sooo glad he's okay now, I pray he'll continue to stay in good health. He's so blessed to have a wife who knows her stuff and knows what to watch out for. :)

Cardiac disease is really a strange thing and the more I work with people who have it the more I have decided that genetics is key. I have seen very overweight people with terrible diets who don't have a lick of coronary artery disease. Denny is just the opposite. He has bad genes and high cholesterol as his risk factors. I knew the day I married him it was just a matter of time. He was far more shocked than I was. Smoking and diabetes are also terrible risk factors for cardiac disease.

Thank you for your concern about Denny. I think he will do well and now that its going on 4 months he is really starting to relax.

Happy to hear you were able to get some points for the GF!!! You are the second person I know who was able to buy them!! :cool1:
I'm looking forward to trying to plan a F&W trip for next year, not sure if it will work out, but I'm thinking about it. It's good to dream. :)

It was totally a splurge and it shocked me that Denny wanted to "go for it". I wasn't going to turn that down. :rotfl:

And - yes - it is always good to dream about your next Disney vacation. I do it every day!

Can't wait to see how your extended trip works out for y'all.

y'all - I love that saying! I want to live in the south!

I am very excited for our October trip. I am already in vacation withdrawal as I have started a new job and have absolutely NO vacation. Not a single extra day off until the end of October. Can't wait!

Gorgeous pictures. I'm just taking it all in. How was the weather? I get cranky when it's hot and I'm out walking. Wondering if this is something I need to plan for. As of right now I'm booked at AKL for my birthday next March, but I've been seriously considering HHI.

We went to HHI in March and LOVED it!!! It was a nice break from the spring break crowds at WDW!

Lots of fun updates!

DH and I were talking about what we would do if we wanted to go to Savannah but wasn't sure what there was. So you can park for free at the Visitors Center and take trolleys if you want? But you recommend walking right?

Very cool that you're allowed to drink alcohol while out roaming the streets. I know you can do that in Vegas, but have never been () so i'd love to say i've done it one day.

I've never tried Fried Green Tomatoes before (another ->..I feel like I haven't experienced anything :lmao:) But your meal at Vic's looks delicious.

Wow that was a big update! Thanks for sharing everything from Savannah. I've been there, but never really explored it like that, so I didn't know about all that there was to see and do there. That restaurant you had lunch in is so cute, and I'm glad that the food was so delicious! I'm also glad to read that so far Denny is doing well - I can imagine it would be hard to be all cooped up when you are supposed to be on vacation so it is great that his body was cooperating :)

Oh and I'm so sorry that you didn't get the AAA position, I am sure that you would have been an excellent fit for that job. I hope that another opportunity like that will come up for you soon.

Mary Ellen you shared some great photos of your walking tour of Savannah! Glad that Denny had no issues with the steps, that was certainly a test. :)

I love all the shops and markets but I agee, most of it is more than anyone could want or need. I restrain myself from any impulse purchases as best I can - sometimes the urge to purchase a cookbook or knick nack overwhelm me!

Those are a lot of name on the WW2 memorial for just that area.

What a great day!

Oh, and how aggravating that the resort tried to charge you a rack rate for the additional nights. At least you stood your ground.

Great Savannah pictures!!

FYI - Last time we visited Savannah, we had lunch at The Distillery...great food, and great beer selection!

Continued From Previous Post

I toured this house with my GF's. It was lovely, but a very strange experience. Tour guides in Savannah are very up tight and you can't touch ANYTHING. And when I say anything, I mean you better not even lean against a wall. They will scold you for that. I'm serious.

Just like the bag holder at Chef Mickey's! Way to serious.

Great pics. Being from the south, I am a little partial to any southern city. :thumbsup2

Thank you!

Wow - so close and yet so far away when you can't get somewhere because of lack of finances. Maybe you'll get a chance to get back there. The whole area is very beautiful.

I enjoyed your pictures of Savannah. We were there in 1998 and the place is looking a lot better now. We drove down from Hilton Head for the day, just like you did.

:welcome: Wood Nymph! Thanks for joining in!

Glad you enjoyed the pictures. I heard that they have really revitalized the area in recent years. I think they did a great job. It's really lovely there.

I just might shock him, though, and try them if I get a chance. ;)

That was my first time trying shrimp and grits and it was fabulous. We don't have grits here in the northeast either. I'm not sure why because shrimp is very popular in this region. I think it makes a great combo. I didn't try it at F&W, but if I see it in October I definitely will.

!

WOW! I have some of the same pictures coming up in my TR!! HA! I think I'm still a day away from our day in Savannah though. It's cool to see stuff I remember and "know" when it's not WDW!!

I'm sure where have a lot of the same pictures. It's funny that I am writing about HHI first and you are writing about it last. I can't wait to see your pictures. I am really looking forward to all your HHI & Savannah updates!

Sorry about the TA job thing. You never know, it maybe just isn't your "time". Could happen later on, right?!

I'm a little bummed, but realistically it would have been a bad time to take on a new endeavor. I hope I do get a chance in the future. It's something I have wanted to do for a few years now.

Glad Denny did okay with all the walking and those stairs! I totally remember being breathless from them! !

Those stairs were a little wicked and dangerous. Can you imagine at night? I wonder how many people trip and fall around there. :confused3

Such pretty pictures! Savannah is so picturesque!

It really is. I loved it there.

We went to HHI in March and LOVED it!!! It was a nice break from the spring break crowds at WDW!

As I recall you had pretty nice weather. The week before we went the weather was terrible. I'm glad we went when we did.

Lots of fun updates!

DH and I were talking about what we would do if we wanted to go to Savannah but wasn't sure what there was. So you can park for free at the Visitors Center and take trolleys if you want? But you recommend walking right?

Glad you enjoyed the updates!

Yes - you can park for free and its very easy to find. Basically right across that bridge you saw in several of the pictures.

I think for your first visit the trolley is not a bad idea. I had already been there once so I had an idea of what I wanted to see and I knew that everything was within walking distance. If you guys are good with maps you can definitely walk to all the points I am showing you.

Very cool that you're allowed to drink alcohol while out roaming the streets. I know you can do that in Vegas, but have never been () so i'd love to say i've done it one day.

Vegas, New Orleans, and Savannah. Imagine drinking in a town with that many tripping hazards? :rotfl:

I've never tried Fried Green Tomatoes before (another ->..I feel like I haven't experienced anything :lmao:) But your meal at Vic's looks delicious.

I remember trying them a couple times when I was a kid. I think my little old italian grandmother made them. But Savannah was the first time I tried them again in many years. Those tomatoes were prepared perfectly.

I am glad your husband is doing better! A would say that after what you guys had been through so far, I would have wanted a beer too!

We went to HHI in March and LOVED it!!! It was a nice break from the spring break crowds at WDW!

I couldn't believe how many people were at WDW this year mid March. I kept looking around and thinking, why are you people crowding MY park? :rotfl2: my AP will have expired so I'm thinking of trying a new place next birthday.

Wow that was a big update! Thanks for sharing everything from Savannah. I've been there, but never really explored it like that, so I didn't know about all that there was to see and do there. Denny did fine in Savannah. We were actually all pretty tired by the time we finished touring Savannah. So glad you liked the update. I have more pictures to share, but I thought I better stop and save them for the next update. Vic's was great. I was so glad that shop owner recommended it. It was the perfect place.

Oh and I'm so sorry that you didn't get the AAA position, I am sure that you would have been an excellent fit for that job. I hope that another opportunity like that will come up for you soon.

Thanks! I would have really enjoyed being in their first class, but I do believe that things happen for a reason. The timing just wasn't right. I hope to try for it again in the future.

Mary Ellen you shared some great photos of your walking tour of Savannah! Glad that Denny had no issues with the steps, that was certainly a test. :)

So glad you liked the pics.

Those steps - sheesh - :rotfl: I felt a little guilty once we got down there and I saw those steps. But Denny did great!

I love all the shops and markets but I agee, most of it is more than anyone could want or need. I restrain myself from any impulse purchases as best I can - sometimes the urge to purchase a cookbook or knick nack overwhelm me!

I know the feeling! It happens to me too! Normally I can just walk away. There was a lot of junk in those shops on river street, that's for sure!

Those are a lot of name on the WW2 memorial for just that area.

I know. That was a really cool memorial. Very interesting in structure. Very patriotic.

What a great day!

It really was and there's more to come! ::yes::

Oh, and how aggravating that the resort tried to charge you a rack rate for the additional nights. At least you stood your ground.

It was just weird because I inquired once about extending the stay, then went back the next day and made the reservation, then went back the very next day to check in. How did they not know I was DVC? Did they not notate it? It sort of irritated me because I said it was because of a medical problem that we were staying.

Great Savannah pictures!!

Thanks!

FYI - Last time we visited Savannah, we had lunch at The Distillery...great food, and great beer selection!

That's so good to know because I am certain I WILL be back. And a great beer selection is definitely an asset to any drinking establishment.

Just like the bag holder at Chef Mickey's! Way to serious.

:rotfl2: Perfect analogy! You are SO right! :rotfl2:

Great pics. Being from the south, I am a little partial to any southern city. :thumbsup2

And I can see why. The southern cities are pretty amazing. So different from here in the northeast.

I am glad your husband is doing better! A would say that after what you guys had been through so far, I would have wanted a beer too!

:welcome: Britard! Thanks for joining in! My DH Denny is doing much better. It's really amazing procedure because if all goes well you are back on your feet in no time!

:thumbsup2 to the beer!

I couldn't believe how many people were at WDW this year mid March. I kept looking around and thinking, why are you people crowding MY park? :rotfl2: my AP will have expired so I'm thinking of trying a new place next birthday.

:lmao: Those darn people invading your park like that! The nerve! :rotfl:

I do think you would like HHI. It's a really pretty place. The Disney touch is there and alive and well.

What a lovely day in Savannah you had! I love all the statues and monuments.

It was really a lively day in a lovely town. I am thrilled we got to spend the day there and there's more to come!

Hi there!

I am at the dentist with Tim, catching up on my phone while he gets his teeth cleaned. I just wanted to say- the cruise is 4 nights, not 3- Thursday to Monday, not Sunday. :) 4 nights is quick enough! Day 1 is sail away, day 2 is Nassau (I think we might do a foodie tour there if you'd like to join us), days 3 & 4 are at CC, day 5 you disembark. There is no palo brunch offered on a dd, that is the only downside to this- but 2 whole days at Serenity Bay waaaaaay make up for that!

If you didn't already figure this out, I moved our October 2014 cruise to the October 24th sailing which is a Double Dip. Same Price, but two stops at Castaway Cay. Best Part is Ellen (podsnel) is on that cruise.

How cool is that? I'm sure you two will have a great time togther!

In other news, I did NOT get offered the magic creator position at AAA.

I'm sorry to hear that. You would have been great at it.

So we all agreed that we would walk directly to the river front. Obviously we were showing no mercy for the man with a new stent in his coronary artery, but in a way he really wanted to get out there and make sure he wasn't having any more chest pain. Testing the waters (or the emergency 911 system), so to speak.

:rotfl: I guess there's only one way to find out!

We perused the stores on the back side of the water front

Wow, they have the back side of water too?

The stairs are also somewhat steep. When we got down to the river level I looked at Denny, pointed back at the stairs and said, "there's your stress test because there is no other way out of here". We all laughed but I was starting to wonder about the wisdom of stair climbing .

:scared:

You know the type - chocked full of stuff you can't possibly need or want

Hey, I was just thinking we didn't have enough 3D puzzles.

A Delaware shotglass in Savannah? See what I mean? Who needs that?

A seriously awesome person, obviously.

Vic's was lovely. I instantly knew we made a great choice. The restaurant had nice high ceilings and bright hard wood floors and a view of the river.

Looks like a terrific place! :thumbsup2

What did I order?

One of each? :confused3

If you ever go to Savannah and you want to try some local favorite dishes, you must try Vics. The lunch prices were very reasonable - less expensive than a Disney table service restaurant and the food was fab.

Duly noted. Thanks for the tip!

I toured this house with my GF's. It was lovely, but a very strange experience. Tour guides in Savannah are very up tight and you can't touch ANYTHING. And when I say anything, I mean you better not even lean against a wall. They will scold you for that. I'm serious.

Reason #867 why I don't do well with house tours. :rolleyes1
