Does anyone here know what is the difference between the Attkins Diet and the South Beach Diet? I need a high protien low carb ( unprocessed carbs). It is for reason's other then weight loss that I'm looking into this.

hi...i've recently been looking into the South Beach diet and read the book...my understanding is the SB diet allows less saturated fat than Atkins and allows for "good" carbs such as fruit and veggies after the first two weeks. It gives you a "glycemic" index of certain foods...the higher the glycemic number the faster the food processes into sugar and causes an insulin rise in your bloodstream. Okay...it's getting too complicated to explain. In a nutshell they are very similiar except the SB diet allows you more fruits and veggies and less saturated fat. Hope that helps!
 

South Beach allows more complex carbs and less fat-no eggs fried in butter and eaten with bacon but rather eggs cooked with just a spray of fat and a little low fat cheese. In later stages fruit, whole grain bread, and the odd sweet potatoe are allowed. The greatest difference is that there is no emphasis on being in ketosis-the author does say that he thinks the dangers have been overblown but that is the only mention of ketosis in the entire book. I tend to be quite obssesive so not having to worry about that is a plus for me. South Beach is intended to be a diet to improve blood chemistry for cardic patients-wieght loss is sort of a side effect.

You know I don't think I've ever been made an honorary Brit. I think I'm just in on a girlfriend visa ;) LOL.
