I think some people take the boards way too seriously

For those of you who have not seen the thread a disser was killed, along with her 2 oldest daughters in a car accident:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=956047&page=1&pp=15

The disser involved had been banned, probably a few times and the original poster was concerned that we wouldn't allow the post to stand because of that. I have to admit I was pretty shocked by that.
It's not easy to run boards this size. We have issues daily. We make decisions and I know sometimes people's feelings get hurt.
Right now there is a husband mourning his wife and his children. A couple of 2 year old girls that have to grow up without their mother and their sisters.
These are moderated boards and we do control them. There are plenty of unmoderated boards available if that is what someone desires. The vast majority of our posters prefer a moderated board and that's why they are here.
With all of that said some perspective has to be kept.
My heart goes out to that husband and those two little girls. I really could care less that the poster caused us a few problems or had an issue or two.
At the end of the day this is only an internet board and life goes on.
The tragedy suffered by that family is very real.
For myself, and every moderator and webmaster I have spoken too our hearts go out to that family.

Here! Here!....

Prayers are with the family at this time.

Once the shock wears off ask the group again why the feeling was that it wouldn't be allowed.

The practice of deleting anything about banned posters is crazy and should be looked at again.

I agree completely. The practice of taking things too seriously has worked both ways around here lately.

Alex, frankly I don't blame them for having doubts.

But bless everyone affected by this horrible tragedy. It's truly so sad.

I think there was a feeling that it wouldn't be allowed because after anyone is banned, if their name is mentioned, the thread disappears within minutes. No one wanted to make the WebMasters or Moderators mad by posting a banned members name, and simply asked permission before doing so, so that the powers that be would know what was going on. I honestly don't think there was an underhanded thought here and this "group" was trying to go about this in the proper way.

I would have been absolutely amazed if that thread had been deleted. I never thought for a second that it would be.

My thoughts and prayers are with this family. What a tragedy :(

I completely agree Alex. I didn't respond to the thread yesterday because it was getting away from the proper purpose of sympathy for her family.

Considering the rate at which posts were "poofing" around here just recently, it's no wonder that imsorry worried that her thread may have been deleted. I don't think a moderator should be surprised at how paranoid they have made all of us.

Thank you for that, Alex. The reason the OP did not want to mention Lea's name was for the reason mentioned by cardaway. After the banning of the long time Dis poster, there was a banning craze in effect. Any mention of bannings or banned posters led to the banning of the poster who brought it up. There was concern that if Lea's name was mentioned, all associated on that thread would also be banned and none of us wanted that to happen. All the OP was trying to do , in a discreet way, was to notify any one on the DIS who knew Lea and felt that they should know what happened to her. I really don't think that is a case of "taking the boards to seriously" but being cautious of prior events.

Of course, questioning the rules or actions of the mods can lead to deletions too so even this thread is kind of spooky.

My feelings exactly.

I agree with everyone that has said that they understand the doubts. One of the nicest ladies on here was banned (and we all know who I'm talkign about) and then several other posters were banned for mentioning her name. Not to mention the countless others who've jumped off the dis bridge in her name.

My heart goes out to her family and friends.

Actually, no one asked permission. The webmasters saw the thread and reached out to the poster to let her know that the thread and the information about losing someone we knew here was very appropriate and that of course we would not delete it.

I really agree with everybody who says the lady had doubts. I'm not even kidding.

May she, and her children, rest in peace.

Sorry, my misunderstanding.

I agree the fear of banning is a real one around here. When it apears members who are greatly loved by many are banned for reasons that are difficult to understand it creates fears in many.

I thought about starting a thread about it, but figured it would be a good way to get poofed, so didn't. I am glad we can talk about with out fear of being banned. I think it is real problem on Dis.

I am so sorry for Deafmedics family. My heart goes out to them. My brother is raising his kids alone after the death of their mother and it is very difficult. They will be in my prayers. :grouphug:

Good golly. Let's make sure all the proper info gets out on THIS particular incident. I wish that happened all the time. :(
