I Swear...I'm Gonna Sell A Kidney

I think this is akin to saying "I'd give my first born", "I'd pay an arm and a leg" and "I'd sell my soul". It's hyperbole and little else

No one truly believes that anyone would "sell a kidney" to stay at the Poly and for anyone to be hurt by that phrase is hard for some folks to understand.

As someone who has withstood more than his share of derogatory slurs, I would suggest that you might be further ahead by trying to see the humor in what was said.

I understand that this is a very personal thing to you, but I think you need to realize it's just that....a personal thing.

I also think you must consider intent when considering whether a phrase is hurtful. There are words that can hurt when used by someone meaning to be hurtful that will mean nothing when said by a friend in a joking way.

We're better off when we all try to be understanding of one another.

1st - Kevin, you are SO well spoken/written! I love it!
2nd - "We're better off when we all try to be understanding of one another." - so true! What a great way to express that.

and 3rd - "As someone who has withstood more than his share of derogatory slurs" awww  Honestly Kevin, when I first started listening to the podcast I thought you were sort of a ... well.. um.... a... *cough*meanie*cough*. I thought your restaurant reviews were too harsh and I thought you were mean to Bob.. but now that I have listened more and actually understand all of the podcast crew and their personalities.. you are one of my favorite people and I love your restaurant reviews!!!

so.. I say YEAAAAAAH KEVIN!!! :cheer2:

ummmm.......

ok, we now return you to your regularly scheduled message board thread....

beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppppppp..........

I'll apologize to anyone I may have offended with my overzealous reaction to the Poly Concierge review. And I thank those who understood that it was just that, an overzealous statement.

Sheesh... :confused3

you could always go dumpster divin for copper!!!

I hear thats worth some mooolaaaaaa:laughing:

Here's a strange copper story, but it is also a statement of the economic times we live in. Outside my local high school, there was a 3 foot in diameter penny "sculpture". It was an exact replica of a US penny. It was made of copper...and it was stolen this summer. It had the year the school opened as the penny's year, so it was a marker for the school's longevity and success.

I would venture to say, that was one penny that worth a lot more than one cent. And, that sucker had to be HEAVY!

I feel bad for the kids that go to school there though because it was part of the culture of the high school and many a photo had been taken next to it. It's not something that will be replaced most likely, of if so, it will be made out of something cheap and just painted copper.

I'm sure that would have nicely financed a visit to the Poly.... JUST KIDDING!

I hope you someday get to go to the Poly! I saw a glimpse of it for the first time yesterday and thought it looked great! I do hope you get to go with your kidney though :)

I do hope to be able to have that distinct pleasure someday myself. I was able to eat at Ohana for breakfast in 2007 and while the food left something to be desired, I was able to explore the Ceremonial House and it was very beautiful. That in itself made me feel like I had been transported to the south seas!

Also, I would never sell my first born, because she's my only one and my best Disney buddy! ;) I wouldn't have anyone to go with if she didn't come along! The Poly would be no fun without her.

She looks like this ----> princess:

Sad part is, because of false stories like that people actually believe they are true and will not donate because of it.

I have talked to many people who believe that if they are in an accident that the paramedics will not treat them just so they can die and get their organs. 1,000% WRONG! They see TV shows where someone needs a kidney and the doctors tell them if they do not donate now their loved one will die! What a false image that puts out there.

I do understand it was meant as being funny, but when you see small kids die because they did not get a transplant your view of things changes quickly.

I challenge everyone to donate a kidney now, there are over 80,000 people waiting for one. What a wonderful world it would be if the waiting list was at zero.

I found the original post humorous and BTW, I'm already a registered organ donor, not just kidney, but anything they want to take once I'm gone. I do have to say though, that there is another side to organ donation. My husband's aunt was in a coma, no brain activity, etc. She had expressed a wish to be a donor. They kept her on life support for 6 days. DH's uncle made the decision to let her go, but the doctor's continued to pressure him to keep her alive until they were able to find recipients for her organs. Two previous recipients, for one reason or another, didn't work out. He finally put his foot down and said enough was enough. The doctors continued to try to make him feel guilty by bringing up the fact that this is what she wanted. Exactly how long should someone be kept alive until their organs can be harvested? Who incurs this added expense from the hospital, etc.? I think the doctors need to realize that this is a person, not just some"thing" to be harvested from. JMHO. I'd hate to know once my family came to terms with what was happening and decided to let me go, that a doctor would argue with them and put more pressure on them to keep me alive for an extended period of time. There needs to be a happy medium for everyone involved.

The cost to harvest and transport the organs is paid by the recipients insurance. In this situation I would think it would be the local organ procurement organization (OPO).

I'm sorry to hear how this situation was handled, it was completely wrong. This kind of story is what give organ transplantation a bad image, and many hospitals don't even want to deal with it. They are only trying to make a very bad situation into a life saving one for someone else. Also it is cheaper to have a transplant than to keep someone on dialysis for any amount of time, in both dollars and heath of the patient.

Kidneys will last 4 days outside the body, livers will last 2 days, hearts and lungs are 24 hours. If they could not find a recipient in 2 days they should let it go, no questions asked.

I did write a note to Pete a few weeks ago suggesting a segment on people who are on dialysis and how to travel to WDW and keep living life to its fullest. I have not heard back from him on it yet, I really do hope he takes me up on it, I think it could be helpful to many people and be an eye opener to many others.:thumbsup2

Again, this is what bothered me because I believe the payment for the harvesting, etc. was to be paid by the organization, but the hospital was going to continued to bill him for the room, nurses, machinery, etc. and that's just wrong. It's not what he wanted and shouldn't have had to pay but it also shouldn't mean someone else doesn't get the life-saving organs they need. There must be some middle ground because it really is a worthy cause. Obviously I continue to be listed as an organ donor and hope to be able to help someone once I'm gone.

I think what is funny about this whole thread is that it was suppose to be about staying at the Poly AND somehow has become a thread on organ transplants.

I have kidney failure and yes I will need a kidney transplant in the near future, but because of my attitude and my love for Disney, I would sell my good kidney to go. Again it is just an expression.

I feel for those that have to deal with loved ones and organ transplant and I feel for those that want to go to Disney. The thing is, if you are as sick, as I am, you need a wonderful sense of humor to get through the day.

Thanks.... this thread made me laugh. I love how it started out one way and ended up in a totally different direction.

As an OR nurse, I am also a registered donor for all of it- organs, bones, eyes, etc... I see organs go to waste because familys cant part with them, I see people die because they dont get them and the joy of a patiet when they are wheeled into the OR knowing they are getting a life saving organ. I have been there for the harvesting, the tough ones are the eyes and bones. I applaude anyone who takes a moment to tell a family member they wish to be a donor.:thanks:

:confused3 Anyway, the Poly is beautiful and I've heard multiple times that it is the best of the deluxes.

Actually, I work in a trauma center that sees many organ donors a year. Once the decision to donate is made, all hospital services are then billed to the donor organization. I have the utmost respect for organ donors and their families. It is amazing to make such a selfless choice at such a heart wrenching time.

And can I just ad how much I love this board. Where else can you start talking about the Poly and end up discussing organ donation:lovestruc ?
