OK, friends...I HATE to run. When I played softball in high school, I ran, but only because I had to.

Now that I'm starting to get in shape, I really wanted to try to enjoy running (I still don't understand how that is even possible, but many of my friends say it is!). I have dreams of the WDW Marathon or at least part of it in 2005...well I DID have dreams!

I faithfully do at least 2 miles of WATP at least 5 days a week...I didn't think a little jog could be all that much worse.

I ran between 1/4 and 1/3 of a mile and thought I would die!! What's wrong with me?!? Why does it look so easy but feel so awful? Am I just still too fat to have any business running?

Any thoughts?

P.S. One good thing: my workout today (2 mile walk plus the "jog") put me at 1 month, 2 weeks faithfully exercising at least 5 times a week!

I know how you feel!! I decided to try running again (I used to do it when I was MUCH thinner!) because I really did enjoy it at one time. Well DH runs a lot so he helped me with a plan he had read that might work for you as well. Basically you start out walking for 5 minutes, then run for 2, then walk for 5, run for 2, etc. After you get comfortable with that then you walk for 4 minutes and run for 3, then 3 minutes of walking, 4 minutes of running, etc. Until you can run the whole thing. I am still on the 2 minutes after a week but I do feel like I am handling the 2 minutes better and can actually make it all the way to the end of 2 minutes!:D Don't know if this will help you or not but thought I would share!

I can't run, my knees just won't allow it. My sister loves to run but her knees are turning on her now, too.

I think running is sort of like Atkins. It isn't for everyone ;)

You can do it! I think Kaye has a great plan for you to try to. I know a lot of people here have success straggering the walk/run like that. Don't give up no your not FAT you are getting healthy and this is part of it. You will do it and you CAN do it. I think your so awesome for trying it i want to run someday i'm gonna DO IT to.

Back in 1991, I lost 50 pounds by eating right and walking with hand weights. After I lost so much weight and got in good shape, I noticed I couldn't get my heart rate up by just walking. So one day (in 1995) I left the hand weights at home and started shuffling/running. And you know what? I ran the whole distance I had normally been walking! 6 miles! And that's how I got introduced to running. I worked a little at it. Eventually, I trained and ran two marathons (in 1997 and 1998). I love running!

Then I went through a pretty bitter/nasty divorce and moved to California. I never got back into my running. I'm not sure why. I missed it dearly, but found more solace in dark chocolate. Now I'm back up 45 pounds.

I mostly want to lose this weight so I can run again. I loved the feeling I got from 6 mile runs. It's hard to explain/describe. And yes, the first 2-3 miles are agonizing at times, but once you break through that 2-3 mile barrier, it feels awesome! I won't run at the weight I'm at now for fear of damaging my knees. My goal is to drop enough weight by Halloween so I can start shuffling/running again. The heavier you are, the more you can really hurt your knees. The pounding can be excruciating, so I wouldn't recommend it for the terribly heavy people. You'll only prematurely hurt yourself. But once you drop a few pounds, go for it!
