i pod versus mp3 player ?

Can someone please tell me what the difference is between an i pod and MP3 player. I pod's are a lot more expensive. Are they that much better? Is it just a brand name thing? My DD is wanting an I pod for christmas and I was wondering what the difference was. Thanks a bunch.

Well, if it is an iPod video, it plays movies, video's and TV show episodes too.

iPods also have a lot of memory space - be sure you compare that too when you are comparing prices.

An Ipod is manufactured by the Apple corporation, so in a sense, it is a "name brand thing". They have specific software that they use for downloading and importing music and video files.

An MP3 player is a more generic term for a device that will do these things.

Apple makes 3 basic models of Ipods: shuffle is the cheapest and has the least amount of features. Not possible to specifically select a song, all play at random.

The Ipod Nano is the one that many seem to have. It has a screen for choosing select songs that you might want to hear and a higher capacity for holding songs.

The Ipod with video capability is able to store movies, tv shows, etc.

I bought DW an Ipod Video, 30 gb, for 249.00. I could have gotten it a little cheaper, but if you buy directly from Apple, you can get it engraved. Now, that is not where the $$ stopped. I needed to buy a case, $20.00. I needed to buy a car and home a/c adapter, $25.00. I needed to buy a battery backup for plane rides to Disney World, $20.00. I needed to buy software that would rip the home dvds onto my computer to put them on her ipod, $60.00. DW being extremely happy, priceless.

Our tech guy at our job SWEARS by non Apple mp3 players... you can save a ton of money on them. He just showed me a Sandisk Video capacity MP3 player he bought for $149 brand new.

Some companies make their units so that the battery is built-in which means you have to send the player back to the manufacturer to get the battery replaced and you have to pay (sometimes as much as $75).

We're a Creative family here. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I will NEVER buy an IPOD.

We now have 3 Creative nano's...DBF has gone through 2, he's on his second...the 1st one fell from 142 feet while he was hanging from the crane at work. DD's both have them as well, and they are quite high quality. These are USB type, without a built in hard drive...The first one was 75 bucks now they are 50-60 at walmart...

I have the Creative Nomad 60 gig. It will be 3 years old this christmas, and I have NEVER had a single problem with it. It still holds it's full charge on the battery, and never has had any hard drive problem. I have done things your not suppose to do with it...Since it's a hard drive, your not suppose to 'run' with it, but I do....I also ski with it, I use it in my car with the fm transmitter, and I have been known to leave it in the car during winter months... Before DD9 got hers, I also let her take mine on field trips when they have long bus rides etc...It's been dropped more times than I can count...

I have had to call creative once for help with formating one of the nanos...it had an issue right out of the package, but the tech support was in America, with English speaking operators, without serious accents. It was the best customer service I've received for any electronics I've purchased.

Thankfully, my kids are not into the 'ipod' craze, but if they were, I still would NEVER buy them the apple brand- for the simple fact that your paying for the "IPOD"....no thanks!

Oh, FYI, my big creative, compared to the same "ipod" was about $150.00 less at the time of purchase...it came with the case, with the house charger, and with a rebate for the car charger...

My 3 smaller ones, run on a AAA battery, I purchased a pack of 8 recharables and the charger for 19.99 awhile back on sale at Rite-Aid.

My Big one, has a lithium battery, that I have not had to replace yet. I do let it run down to complete drain before charging it though....thats suppose to extend the life, and also not create a 'memory' of 1/2 charges.

And I totally do not get refusing to buy a product because of it's brand.

I have a Nano and I don't know much about other MP3 players. What I like about mine is the accessories that are readily available. I have an attachment so I can play my Ipod through my car radio, and a clock radio at work that I hook my Ipod onto. I like to download podcasts and listen to them at work.

From what I understand, Apple's music format is more superior than the MP3 format so the music sounds better. I didn't buy mine because it was "In", I bought mine because it was better.

I would not get an ipod either. The Creative players are very good and play all formats instead of only iformats. My DBF says I could play our Divx movies on it, but not on an ipod.

And I am also one of those people who won't buy things based soley on the brand. I won't buy any brand that still practices animal testing. I also do not see the point in buying a brand name player that requires specific branded downloads when most other players will play all of my downloads.
That is like buying a PS3 if there was a $400 system that played PS, Xbox and nintendo games. Just doesn't make sense. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong- some of DBF's tech knowledge gets lost in translation by *me*
