My oldest is a college freshmen. Money wise so far he's been pretty good. Dh & I suggested that he not work his first term freshmen year as we wanted him to get use to the college routine and being on his own. He's always been a special ed kid (wonderful college program) so we thought it best to concentrate on that first.

Anyhoo, just as I was patting myself on the back for raising Mr. Nobel prize winner, I mentioned to him that our local amusement park was having a job fair for summer jobs this Saturday so he should go and pick up a summer job.

My child, the one I spent 17 hours in labor with, the boy I sat freezing my cahoonies off in the spring to watch him play little league baseball, the reason why I'm eating ramen noodles so he can graduate without huge student loans, said to me.

"oh you want me to work? I was planning on spending the summer in NY with Uncle Stevie. It is my vacation after all" :scared1::mad:

Some one remind me again the joys of "Parenthood"
If I ram his cell phone down his throat will I be responsible for the medical bills?

I hear you... I don't have one that old yet .. but I know many people that do and yepp.......motherhood......I can see it coming.
what are you going to do ??

Just point out to him that in the real world you get 1 week of vacation the first year.

Nope, not responsible for the bills. And if you had to go to court, as long as your lawyer made sure you had a jury of parents with college kids, you would get off scot free. :rotfl2:

LOL! Thanks for the chuckle! There better be no way in heck you let him not work this summer. That's what college summers are for!

That's why God gave them to us a cuddly babies. If we got them as teenagers/young adults, the human race would end!

And I agree, a jury of your peers would not convict you at all!

KIDS!!!!

Our DS17 is working at the local amusement park this summer and it is a sweet deal. They guarantee him 50 hours/week, good pay and $1/hour bonus paid in November if they complete their contract. They give $50 referral bonuses, DS has 6 friends hired already. They will put you on the same schedule as your friends and the kids think that is cool, the parents think it is smart because then they carpool and if you are going with 3 friends, you will show up for work :thumbsup2. He is pretty excited.

I think I would ask him if he plans to work when he gets back, or is he planning not to work all through college? No one will give him a "real" career type job, when he graduates, if he hasn't been building a work history and getting experience.

It's possible that he is looking at this summer as an extension of his Freshman year and part of the time you, understandably, didn't want him to work. I think just a little communication will clear it up or at least open the door for you to let him know what you expect and what you will and won't pay for from this point on.. Good luck!:)

LOL I think the boy has just been watching too much MTV. I mean growing up him and his brothers always, always had chores. We got them a playstation (1, the original version) and every subsequent gaming system they had to work for cash, pool their money and then buy themselves.

So initially I laughed when he came up with this brilliant idea. I mean, the kids had me for a mom for 19 years now. Did he think I got a lobotomy or came up with a case of amnesia?
