I just came back from vacation and now something else is wrong with my car.
Let me give you a very short and quick breakdown of what's happened to my car in about 45 days.....$600+ IN REPAIRS!
I have a 1999 VW Jetta and I really do love my car, but since late February I have dropped some serious money into it and it's starting to concern me. Some repairs have been done by VW...very expensive, but I know it's done right, one was done by a family friend who is quite cheap and very well trusted, another was done by a car auto shop that specializes in foreign cars, they did okay, but I WILL NOT return to them again.
I took it to a place today and they told me the noise I'm hearing has nothing to do with the oil, but they think it's coming from the altenator. VW was the last one in that area, so it was suggested for me to take it back to them to see if it was something they did. I explained over the phone to the service manager at VW that I DID NOT have $72 to give them for the diagnostic test. He explained that I bring the car anyway and if it was their fault he would know right from the get go and they would repair it, if not, I'm calling the friend to see what he can do. I have only put this much money into my Jetta one other time and that was back in 2001 when I was on the college program. I went in for a $49.99 brake job and came out $656 later!!!
I was showed everything wrong and the manager of Firestone spoke to my DH on the phone for about 20 minutes and broke it all down for him. I was in tears and frantic and I could see a genuine look of concern in the manager's eyes. I'm gonna tell you what, the work I had done, kept my car running, but here I am 3 years later with other junk!
In November I will have had my Jetta for 6 years and I'm not sure what to think about all the money I'm putting into it. DH and I don't have the finances for another vehicle right now and I don't want one. This is a good car and it's mine. I paid it off 3 years early back in October of 2000. I'm just at a loss and I'm scared.
I hope you all understand when I say that The Father has blessed me dearly in having my car, and He has more than provided me with the finances to fix my car, as well as keep my car running when it should have been out of comission a looooooooooooong time ago, but I get out of my spirit and into my flesh and go....OH NO, MORE MONEY GONE OR GOING ON THAT DING DONG CAR!!!!
I have to remind myself of the 1984 Ford Escort DH and I had back in AK. The year we were leaving, 1994, we dropped $1500 into that car in January and February of that year. In March about one month before we were to leave the car just died!!!!
I was told on a car about 10 years or older all you should be putting into it on repairs is about $1000 a year....well, we blew that right out of the water the first two months of the year. Well here it is April of 2004 and I've put $600 in repairs into my Jetta. I have no idea what the average yearly repairs are on cars of 5 years or older, but good grief Charlie Brown!!!!
I guess I could just use some advice and words of wisdom from my DIS friends. This is my only means to and from work. DH has his motorcycle and it's running just great. We work such opposite hours of each other, so it would be difficult to get to and from where I have to go if I just let my Jetta go. I can't do that you know. I do have one savings bond left. It hasn't reached it's face value of $1000 yet, but it's over $700. I just hope I don't have to cash that one it too. I've already cashed in one for one car repair, I would hate to have to do my last one for that. But do you think that's what the savings bonds were meant for? I mean my father got them for me in April of 96 without even telling me and his old girlfriend finally sent them to me back in January.
I sure could use some words of wisdom. Thanks.
Denise
