I am looking for a new TV. I AM SO CONFUSED!!!!!!!!! This would be our first HDTV. It is going in my bedroom since that is where I watch 99.9% of my TV shows. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. It is a combo present from everyone this Christmas (me included) I went to Best Buy yesterday and liked the looks of the Samsung. I am trying to decide between the 37" and 40" so that makes it LCD. If I go for a 42" I could go up to a plasma, but they seem to run much hotter than the LCD, and I don't need any more heat in this house. A friend has said the difference between 720 and 1080 at this size is negligible. But of course the person at Best Buy said if I were to go for Blu Ray I WOULD see a difference.

I have seen reports of problems with Samsung power/mother board and trouble getting service.

Too many options so little brain.

We're upgrading our TV shortly as well Kim. You're right, all of the things to be considered in the decision can be overwhelming. :scared:

Personally, I would recommend you get the larger TV possible. I have an LCD in the bedroom and a Plasma in the living room, and both are great, but as you say - the plasma does heat up much more and is much heavier to move around.

If you have windows behind where you will be sitting to view the TV, you might want to consider LCD because there is always a reflection from the plasma TVs.

Good luck in your decision!

I personally can't stand big TV's, so I would probably go with the 37". We LOVE our Samsung, but I would also recommend Sony. At 37", I would try to go with 1080p, and would definitely get it on anything larger.

Good luck! :)

Kim,

You might look at this thread Nicole started in August. It contains several good points about LCD v Plasma and about buying an HDTV.

Thank you all. I'm pretty set on the LCD, still trying to decide on the brand and size. The Samsung gets good reviews, but there are those that are complaining about something with the power capacitor(?) so that is scaring me. I tend to have the tv on a lot and was even thinking of connecting the computer sometimes. Back to the research.

My DH saw a LED Vizio at Sams Club and fell in love....

Guess I will be replaced by a TV.....:lmao:

so DH is saving his money......

Regarding 1080P vs. 720P:

For the majority of people and the majority of viewing conditions, the human eye cannot distinguish the difference between 720P and 1080P.

The 2 big factors are screen size and viewing distance. For a 50 inch TV, the human eye cannot tell the difference at any distance greater than about 8 feet. For smaller TVs you have to be even closer.

For 37 -42, you are most likely not going to sit close enough to be able to tell the difference even with true 1080P content.

Save your money and go with 720P at that size unless you sit very close to your TV.

I totally agree! 720p is more than enough for almost everyone. Also, I don't know if you mentioned it, but what is your video source? If you are not even bringing in a 1080p signal than don't waste the money for 1080p.

I checked and Best Buy only has 1080 sets in the size I am looking at in the Samsung. I guess it will be a 1080 for me.

Thanks for all the info.

Kim,

If you want to use the HDTV as a monitor, make sure you have an HDMI or DVI output on your computer.

If you use the standard video port on the computer, flight simulator becomes a crawl simulator. Trust me.

We have two Samsungs. We have a giant 60' Samsung in the bedroom. I'm not sure on the specifics of it, but I think it is an HDTV. It's not an LCD or a plasma though...I don't think anyway.

We had problems with the power of the TV while it was connected to our cable. I'm still not sure what the problem was...we thought it was with the TV. It would stay on for about 45 minutes and then shut off. Very odd. But since we switched over to Dish Network and had it connected properly by the Dish Network people, the TV has remained on for hours at a time! I've been watching TV on it since about 10am-ish this morning and it's stayed on the whole time! I don't know if it was the connection or what, but it seems fine now.

Our second Samsung is downstairs in the living room. It's a smaller TV...that one is LCD and is hung up on the wall. He's got that one connected to a computer as well as the satellite dish, Wii, and PS3. The picture on it is pretty amazing...Not sure the size though. I'm thinking it's 40-ish inches. Not quite 50...I don't believe anyway.

I'm so not into technology so I'm clueless on dimensions or LCD or HDTV or any of that...but I can tell you that Edward looks fabulous on either TV! :thumbsup2 ;)
