I need the good, the bad and the ugly...about Vero Beach??

Yay Denise! Goin' to VB!:cheer2: You DO crack me up girl!! Changing your plans already!:goodvibes (Welcome back...how was your trip last week?)

We added 3 nights in an OVIR at VB to the end of our BCV week in August! I can't WAIT and will be SO-O bummed if there are any storms floating around out there to ruin it! That is my biggest worry about vacationing in late August. But that could happen up here too. Anyway, I think it will be SO-O much better than OC, Bethany Beach or Rehobeth. WARM water! Waves! Nice beach...pool closeby... We have no-seeums at home so we can deal with that. I am like a personal bug magnet for all things biting. Last time we went to Bethany we had rip currents for some reason and FLYS 'cuz the wind direction was offshore rather than onshore. Plus the water is never WARM up here! Oh, and jellyfish here too. I think VB sounds like a dream come true!! I am liking the water temps chart a lot.:thumbsup2 Up here I never get in past my waist (on purpose)!! I have not been to a FL beach in many, many years and this will be a test for us to see if we want to try it out for a whole week sometime. I'm betting the odds are good for us to at least do a repeat of a combo WDW / VB trip more often than not. I fully expect to be a total VB groupie by the time our 3 nights are over.
Take SKIN SO SOFT BY AVON products to ward off the no-seeums. That was the only thing that worked great....the oil is probably the best.

We went in May of 2007 and loved it. Like PPs have stated, everyone was super friendly. Our kids had a blast doing the different activities offered by the resort. The only downside to our trip was that we were unable to go into the ocean at all during our 4 night stay due to strong rip currents.

Annie, I pm'd Denise some info....check with her, she can pass some stuff along to you!:goodvibes

Oh you are going...I forgot that. Yeah I need to call MS right now. I have been on here with Dis stuff and also doing college stuff for my dd. Today I did the "applying for housing application". WOOHOO. :rotfl2: It is exciting to do all this stuff but sad too. :sad1: SO....yes I think we will do this if I can get a place at Vero for my last three nights. I have to call.....so let me do that. OH we had a great 6 nights at OKW. We were in the absolute perfect location....bldg 14 no one above us. It was great. We had a bit of rain one day and part of another but nothing to ruin anything really.

We went in October and fell in love. We are going this Sunday. I booked the only thing available at the inn - a garden view, and then waitlisted for an ocean view. My waitlist came through, but I didn't tell my husband. I want him to be surprised Sunday. In October the temperature was warm - low 80s and the waves seemed warm also. Maybe not warm, but once you got past the initial wave, it was fine. I did not see any bugs when we were there, but I don't think we were out late. We would get up early, watch the sun rise, go down to the beach for the morning, then come up and go in the pool/hot tub and have a few poolside lemonades and then go up and relax in our room, watching the ocean. Its like watching a campfire. One night I got up to go to the bathroom, and the moon was out over the ocean so I had to go out and look at the beauty before going back to sleep. Oh - and a nice touch. The pool was kind of decorated for halloween. The only bad thing was that the internet connection was hit or miss. You could get it in the lobby, but I like to read my e-mail in my jammies with my coffee.
When in Oct. did you go? I'm going 10/11-10/16. How was the weather then?

My family and I had one of the worst vacations ever at VB. And we still can't bring ourselves to go back there.

:wave2:

With that said, it was the first place my boy stood up unassisted and I was fortunate enough to catch a picture of it...

I have tried that b4...but not a fan of the oily feel. At home, we have one of those propane operated mosquito vac things...they work on the no-seeums too, else I am nothing but one big welt all summer long!! Away from home I usually wear my Tinkerbell ballcap and spray it down with Off Skintastic Smooth & Dry to keep them off my face / ears (I have short hair so they REALLY annoy me around face and they attack my ears). I like this Smooth & Dry stuff. Have you tried it? It's got more of a powdery feel. In the summer I seriously get eaten alive so I keep a can in the kitchen by the back door, one in the garage in case I go out that way to garden or something and I keep one in my truck to use whenever I am away from home!! Flying, biting bugs will even go up my shorts to find a spot I missed to chow down! I have big reactions to the bites too. I swell up for days.:sad2: If they bite my ears they swell, turn red and hard...I'm a real attractive sight!!:rotfl: Deet is my best friend in the summer!!:rotfl2:

Annie, I don't think we have no-seeums in Maryland!! DEET will not work on these ones in FLA. Your ordinary bug spray won't work either.

Oh yes we do!! I'm tellin' ya...you'd think I was made of bug bait in the summer! I cannot go outside w/o bug spray. I'm just one of those people. They just "find" me somehow!! We could be in a large group and nobody else will get bites but me...and I get welts the size of 50 cent pieces from them!! I just looked under my kitchen sink cabinet - I have 3 cans of Skintastic, 1 can of Cutter Max, a travel size (on a keychain) Cutter Max, 1 package of Off Cutter wipes, 1 tube of Avon S.S.S. Bug Guard, 1 bottle of Off Botanicals plant based lotion and 2 boxes of Off coils.:lmao: The Cutter products specifically list the No-Seeums as something they repel. During the summer I can tell when we are out of propane on the Skeeter Vac thing too. I know the day it runs out 'cuz they attack me so bad!!

I will be sure to take the Cutter products for VB. The wipes are really handy for traveling like that.:thumbsup2 I can get my ears with them too!;)

Annie, these bugs bite you in the MORNING!!! Also at night. You sure its not moskitos, biting flys, knats? Ok, well take all that....but ya better have some SSS, cause I am telling you, it works!!:beach:

The only downside we had in two very nice stays at VB was that we had a very scary incident at the beach when my then-6 year old daughter was pulled under by a ripcurrent, then I was pulled under while trying to pull HER out. No lifeguards, so the chair rental guy jumped in and grabbed her. Not a really friendly beach for younger kids.

We went last year first week of August....not a wave to be found!! We were like "Where are all these dreaded waves?" The fall tends to have more waves I think due to the water changes due to hurricanes.

On that trip, we were there in April. Must be a seasonal thing.

We'll be going the first week in april...are the bugs (no-se-ums) whatever bad at that time as well?

We were there at the end of October a couple years ago and there was a big storm brewing. It didn't rain all the time, but it was dark and windy. Lots of erosion caused and no swimming in the ocean. We still had fun - went for walks on the beach and played mini-golf, swam in the pool. It was around halloween and we went to a local haunted house that was very cool. Overall a good time, but very different than the trip I'd planned.

The "bugs" I think refers to the infamous "no-see-ums". They are there, but they are just like any other pest... drawn to fire and seem to be most worst at sundown. Soo... wear long pants, socks, and shoes at the campfire.

:goodvibes

We are heading to VB in May for the first time and I was worried about the no-see-ums until my hubby reminded me that living here on Long Island we grew up with them. While they are annoying (flying up your nose is the worst...ugh), a good bug spray and some long pants and we are good to go. VB here we come:cool1:
