The in-laws asked me for a $50 gift idea for myself. I have none. Is it rude to just ask for cash?

IMHO yes I think it's rude to just say cash. Is there a perfume you like to wear? You could ask for a gift certificate to a store you like, but I feel that is different than just asking for the cash. Hope this helps!:)

sorry but that's kinds rude. If you can't think of anything get someting you always use that runs out. Last year my DH wrote down all my makeup colors and went to Sephora and replenished them.

Any music, DVDs.. I'm asking for a new frying pan and towels for the bathroom.. not very exciting.

I love cozy sweaters and always get a few of these at holiday time.. or maybe a few family games?

My fav gift lately was from my mom.. Netflix for a year. :cool1:
Do you have any type of membership that they could pay for a few months? Maybe that would work?

Isn't it a great problem when not only do you not want anything, but you don't even need anything? That's what we're dealing with here too. Very hard to find ideas for anyone.

Yeah, it probably is not good to ask for cash.

At least dress it up as a gift card. Do you have a favorite lunch spot? Do you like to go to the movies? Do you need to renew your Costco membership? I'm sure you can think of something you can use it on!

do you need clothes, shoes, boots? I'd say oh I'd really love (insert items here) but sizes vary so much so maybe a gift card would be best.

a small appliance? something for the kitchen to make cooking easier? a crockpot? a blender for MARGARITAS?????? earrings? jewelry? music? a wii game? jacket? dress clothes for work? a starbucks mug and a gift card? do you like to get a coffee and bagel on the way to work as a treat? a plant? something for your garden?

what are your hobbies? a magazine subscription? running shoes? new sweats? a robe? movies? a gift card for your salon for a haircut or manicure? massage? a purse? wallet?

can you pick something out of the lands end or ll bean catalog? or William Sonoma? nail polish? tickets to a musical?

just trying to help with ideas......

DINNER FOR TWO AT THE BOMA!!!!!!!

do you have any trips planned? something you need for that. New beach towel? tote bag? itunes card?

any books? a series of books? a calendar? personalized stationery? organizing containers?

cooking lessons? knitting lessons? a class at the local museum?

is a new store coming to town? A gift card to Trader Joe's?
certificate to get your car washed, waxed, detailed.

Camera accessories? a new filter?

If you are the practical type, ask for a Gas card or from your local grocery store. I would want a restaurant GC - I'd be happy to get a Red Lobster, Olive Garden or TGIF GC:)

Be happy they asked you, and that you aren't getting you $50 worth of stuff that doesn't fit or that you don't like or that you would have to return or regift, etc.

If you are planning a trip to WDW or Disneyland, how about a Disney gift card? You can spend it to help pay for the hotel or a nice meal or use in in most of the shops there. They can be ordered online at disneyshopping.com or can be purchased in some stores. I got them for my DDs last year at Walgreens. I believe I read here that Sam's Club also has them.

My dh and I always ask our parents for cash towards something bigger (we always have an item we mention). For example, last year we wanted to get an SLR camera, so we told both sets of parents that's what we were trying to get that year and would love it if they could help contribute to that. Both sets of our parents seem fine with that, and we always show them what they helped us buy afterwards. (For a couple years we asked for money towards a bedroom set we were saving up to get.) I guess I'm in the minority and don't think it's rude to ask your parents for the cash instead, but I wouldn't go beyond parents.

My in-laws always ask for a gift list from us as well. While I wish I could ask for cash I do agree that doing so would come across as rude. However I do always put several gift cards on my gift list along with some smaller items and usually they choose to give me the gift card.

This made me laugh. I decided to ask for a GC to cabela's so we could use it toward camping gear. Here is the e-mail I get back from them: "What I had in mind is a jacket/ coat that is what we bought for everyone else, can you look on line at Cabelas , gander Mt or dicks to see if they have any you might like."

Looks like I'm getting a Jacket/Coat. :rotfl2:

Sounds like my in-laws always asking for a list and then getting you what they wanna buy anyway... Im not tryin to sound ungrateful but if your gonna get me what you wanna get me anyway why ask.

I vote for Victoria's Secret :cutie:

Although with a name like leadfootlevi you may not care for that stuff

but at least

you could surprise them.

:lmao: I think this is a great idea! Send them the link to some sexy little underwear thingamajig! I bet they won't ever ask again!

My family presented the same problem to me at my birthday. They said they were out of ideas and was there a thing I wanted that they hadn't thought of...

It was a little out of the given price range, but I went to my sister and told her that if she got everyone to pitch in, I would be THRILLED with this one gift.

So, she hinted to the family and handed them the cut-out from the catalogue of the pair of boots I wanted and longed for and they all got it for me.

I was thrilled with my boots and they were thrilled I was happy.

So, OP, is there a one thing you want? I'd ask for the gift card to that store where it is and then if anyone else asks, ask for the same and then get that one thing that is really out in the clouds. I still love my boots and wear them all the time.

If that isn't suitable how about something that is what I call use-up-able? Like an expensive candle or something from Jo Malone?
