I know it's so scary, but do the work of finding jobs through the fear. Hopefully you guys can take turns being outwardly scared...my hubby's the sole provider, and he was given 2 months notice that the department was closing...I kept it together for quite a good amount of time, then once he started feeling more solid as he looked for future employment, I would have mini-fall-aparts...things only coincided once with mutual freakouts...it was a lot nicer when one was strong whlie the other was weak. So hopefully you'll find yourself in that space too.
As for your mom...if you have anyone else in the household that might spill the beans, just tell her first. We have a 5 year old, and we'd explained bits of it to him...they went to visit my MIL, all was fine for the whole visit until the end as they got ready to go...she said something about his work (as she always does) and DS piped up with "Papa lost his job!"

She's had 2 heart attacks and is high stress to begin with, which is why we kept it from her, but if we had a choice between telling her in our own way vs what DS said, we would have told her the first day.
So if there's anyone else...just tell mom now.
Best of luck to you! Hubby got down to the wire, got a job offer a week before the dept closed. Went from his last day at the old job, had a weekend, started with the new job.
