I would like a new camera before we go to Disney this winter. My current one is a 5 MP Fuji.

I don't want an SLR-just a point and shoot that takes great pictures but is also affordable.

Any suggestions?

Canon D-10 waterproof camera. Bonus is that you don't have to worry about the rain, and can take it in the pool/water parks if you go swimming (and it also takes GREAT pictures!).

I think it's a 12mp, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

I love mine and it took awesome photos during our trip in March.

It's a bit bulky, but it is also "durable" in that it can survive a drop from 5ft onto concrete and not get damaged. :thumbsup2

I'm going to have to second that!! I love my Canon D10 waterproof. It is VERY bulky but worth it. I was just in the World in May and I used it at the Parks, in the rain, in the pool, underwater and at the water parks and all the pictures came out FANTASTIC!!

I just got a Nkon coolpix S570 and am happy with it. It's 12mp, 5x zoom and under $200.00. Best of all it is very small, just slightly larger than my cell phone.

I'm looking to buy a new camera too. I'm looking at the Nikon Coolpix 8000, the Panasonic Lumix ZS-5 and the Canon SX210. You might want to check them out.

I just got the Nikon S8000 and so far am very happy with it.

You might want to look at this article:

It goes into great detail about a number of travel point and shoot cameras and gives test shots under the same conditions with each one.

I went with the the S8000 because it had the right balance for us -- 3" LCD screen, one of the fastest shot-to-shot times, good color balance, and good performance in low light. The pictures are "softer" than some, but since I won't be doing huge blow-ups, that's mostly an academic problem rather than a practical one for me.

Good luck choosing!

I am SO glad to hear the positive remarks about the Canon D10. Mine just arrived yesterday and I am charging up the battery. Will test it out over the next few days.

Any concerns or precautions with the lack of a lens cover?

Replacing the Olympus Stylus Tough 8000. I had an underwater Stylus for a couple of years but it died on the last day of our vacation in Mexico in Feb. The lens on the replacement Stylus fogged up the first time I tried it in water and took days to clear.

I just got the Canon Powershot SD940 and love it. It's so small and lightweight and takes great pictures. 12.1 with 4x zoom. Great camera for the price.

We bought the Nikon Coolpix S8000 in March, and used it at Disney. So we've had it for almost four months, and I absolutely love it - it's small, easy to operate, fast, good pictures, and the 10x zoom is a great feature. Good luck!

Just got a Cannon SX210IS and it is the best P&S (probably my 5th) that I have owned so far. The 14x zoom really makes a difference.

I own the Panasonic Lumix TX-5. I bought it for my WDW trip in 2008 and I still use it. I love the wide angle feature and it has 12x optical zoom.

I am looking for a p&s camera as well. Any suggestions on one that takes good pics quickly in low light? My current camera takes great pics in good lighting but in low light it takes so long to take the picture that they always turn out blurry. Any suggestions? Thank you!

I just got a sony tx9 and have to say I love love love it. Ok its not waterproof but they do sell a waterproof shell. Its not rain proof either. But I get slr quality in a point and shoot and I don't think that can be beat.

This was taken with a Panasonic ZS-3 from Fantasmic about 10 rows from the top dead center. Love it! Usually a Canon guy but not anymore. Great zoom, records high def video and just a great camera. Very happy with my purchase.

Original post was like June, so am assuming the OP got something by now.

But you said it was a 5MP Fuji. Any chance it was a Fuji F20? That's what I had and LOVED it... till son broke it a few months back! Had the toughest time finding a replacement camera that could even come close to it. Ended up with a Lumix FH20... eh, not thrilled with it... but was the better of my choices I bought and tried out (this was camera #5 I tried!)
Hope you found something you love!

Since you can't really change effect the shutter speed (you can only go so low before camera shake or motion becomes a problem), you need to look at the other two things that effect low light photos. Aperture size, and ISO. My old canon 620 had a highest iso rating of 400, the same iso many people used to use for general purpose film, some outside, some indoors. You want a camera with a higher iso choice, something like 800 or 1600, but usually higher iso (sensitivity to light) means higher "grain" in your image. The only other thing you can look at is the lens. The maximum opening in your lens is it's f number. It's easy to find. In the store, look at the front of the camera. Usually around the front of the lens is a set of numbers, like 3.5-5.5 or 2.4-4.5
Those are two f numbers. The lower one is the maximum opening at the widest angle. The higher one is the maximum opening at the most zoomed in angle.
Look for the lowest numbers you can find, on a camera with a high iso.
When you are taking your night photos.... Use your high iso, and zoom out!

And read your manual.

I have a Sony NEX-5 and I like that it is small, light, and has interchangable lenses. I use it for when I don't feel like taking the SLR out and about.
