While I was staying at the VWL, in January. I met an older man who says he lives in the DVC resorts almost all year long. He has three children and he says he visits them for a total of about two months a year, often during the summer and, of course, during the holidays.

He said that when his wife died he planned to sell his DVC points but decided to sell his house instead! He has been doing this now for over two years now and seems to still be enjoying it.

It seemed like he has a little more than 4000 points, He calls it his $250,000 (I guess this was his total cost over the years) retirement home!

What a blast! This is fun to talk about!

Wow, I wonder how much he pays in annual dues!

That would be so cool to do though. :cloud9:

The 2000 point limit is per resort, so you could actually own 14,000 points total among the 7 resorts.

And it looks like a total of about $16,000 in dues

I thought the limit was 2000 points.

I think it's 2000 per resort and 5000 total. Could be wrong, but I remeber that there is a limit for each resort and then a different total limit.

How awesome would that be!

Wow!!!!
That sounds great!
I wish I could spend months on end relaxing @SSR!! :cloud9:

I also met a retired couple back in February who spend several months each year between HHI and OKW. They said they mostly stay in a studio, but when family comes down, they go for a one-bedroom for the week. I think it is a LOVELY idea!!!

I could only do that if they let me keep the dogs though! :rotfl2: I sure would like to spend at least the better part of the winter in OKW though! I just figured out it would cost me about 8000 points to stay in a 2 bedroom at OKW for January, February and March! :earseek: Since I can only own a total 5000 points at different resorts, I doubt THAT will be happening! To get a whole year at OKW, he would need to use all of the 5000 points, and he would have to ONLY stay in studios. Nope, I would NOT be even WANTING to do that!

ME, NEITHER!

Best wishes -

I don't even stay in studios for vacation! I sure wouldn't do it for the whole year! I guess I would just keep the house for that step down!

Maybe some of his points are in his childrens' names. I have heard of several people doing this.

is better than my 4 bedroom at home. :flower: The above poster stated that he spend about 2 months visiting his children, so that should free up some points for larger units when they visit him.

We have actually decided to go the timesharing route when we retire (got a ways to go yet, but are planning early). Can't afford the year round Disney, because much as I joke, I don't think I could stay in a studio all year round. But we live in the Northeast and most retired people here own winter Florida homes. So we got into timesharing points and by the time we retire they will be long paid off and we can spend the winter and then some in Florida without being tied to one house and one location. We figured we'd spend time in Orlando, Pompano Beach, Daytona, and can even head to HHI, Myrtle Beach, Arizona, Las Vegas. I am a CPA and beleive me I did the spreadsheets and calculations, figured out the best way to do it for the the best price. Our DIsney points will be saved for special occasions, but who know what can happen if we win the lottery! I think that rule is 5,000 points per person. Morbid question, what happens if both spouses own 5000 each and then one dies leaving their 5000 to their spouse?

Lisa :)

Don't forget he is an older man on his own. A studio at OKW is quite large and he probably eats most meals out. I know lots of older adults who "winter" in FL in a hotel with a tiny kitchen area. I think our resorts offer us older folks the opportunity to live a lavish lifestyle for very little money. Look at the opportunities for fun activities and fairly inexpensive food (especially off site restaurants). I own a lot of points and I might very well stay at OKW for an extended period in the winter. I couldn't think of a better place to hang out in the sunshine can you?? :cool1:

My wife and I spent 45 days at OKW this winter, most of it was in a studio, which is fine for the 2 of us! We did leave and spend several weekends with family, to conserve on poiints. Spending the winter there was great!! We both love the atmoshpere at OKW, it is so laid back, We have been home almost a month and we miss OKW already, it seems like a year since we left!! We are both hopeful that we will be able to it again next winter. :cool1:

I assume you have APs too. I could never stay there all winter and not visit the parks for a meal at least a couple of times a week! :teeth:

Wow, that would be my dream retirement! Living in WDW! :cloud9: Spending most of the winter there would be wonderful too. :goodvibes

Before we decided to go resale, my DVC guide mentioned that quite a few seniors spend the winters at the resorts (this was to over ride my objection over the minimum point purchase). Guess he wasn't kidding? ;)

We plan on purchasing a 5th wheel and stay at Ft Wilderness for Jan, Feb, and March each winter when we retire. We'll then use whatever points we've accumulated by then to stay in different DVC resorts during other parts of the year.

Sounds nice. Just last night I figured the wife and I could stay for 21 days in January at OKW in a one bedroom once the kids are gone.
