I just made Tonga Toast with a recipe I found online. Uggg :sick:I don't feel so great. Maybe I made it wrong.

I put a slit in middle of a piece of texas toast and stuffed banana  slices in. Then I dipped it in egg and milk with vanilla, just like you would for french toast. Then I fried it in oil, patted it off and dipped in cinnamon sugar.

What did I do wrong?

I didn't like the taste that great either. So I guess that is one less trip I will need to make while at WDW next month. I was really wanting to try it. But if this is anywhere close, I am not a fan.

Couple of things I did differently. I dipped the toast in buttermilk and egg. I fried it lightly in butter - lots of unsalted butter, like half a cup. Also I used brown sugar with the cinnamon. It was really, really good!

Maybe your oil was going bad. A bad oil can really throw off the taste of something. I use butter anytime I can.

:woohoo:

That does sound like a better taste. Ok I won't give up yet. Thanks for the suggestion.

I make French toast with butter, but I'm thinking the Poly deep fries Tonga Toast which would be oil because butter would burn at that high temperature.

The Poly's Tonga Toast is very rich, and it's understandable that it might be a bit heavy for one person to eat the entire serving. It sure tastes good though. :earsboy:

I found the Tonga Toast at Kona to be way too heavy and greasy when I tried it there. I was so looking forward to it, since I love french toast, bananas, sugar, and fried food , but I just did not like the Tonga Toast at all. :confused3 I may, however, give it another try at Captain Cook's during my next trip since I'll be staying at the Poly, just to see if perhaps I got a bad piece of Tonga Toast last time.

I tried it last time we went to Kona for breakfast and I agree with the PP...way too greasy and heavy for me. I had about 10 bited and I was done. I did read on here beforehand that you can ask to have it grilled instead of fried. Well I asked the server and he looked at me like I had 5 heads and 'politely' told me they only fry it. Hmph. Maybe I just got a crappy server but who knows. I'm thinking grilling it would have made it much better?

Love Tonga Toast. We will be eating it in 2 weeks. I am going to try and make it when I get back home.

I think I definitely would have liked it more if it had been grilled! Too bad that's apparently not really an option!

I dip two slices of regular bread in milk, egg, vanilla and put it in the fry pan with Pam.
Put one slice in and then the sliced banana and then the other slice of bread ontop.
I haven't had it come out greasy. This thing about tonga toast is the banana and the sugar/cinnamon topping. The rest is just regular french toast.

It went much better this time. I used 2 pieces of french toast. After they were each cooked lightly I put banana between the 2 pieces and at the end I put butter on each outside piece and cooked that really quickly. It helped the cinnamon sugar stick and tasted really good.

I am a fan now.
