I love my iphone4 BUT...

I think it is the Iphone itself, not ATT. I have the Iphone and it is great for everything except for being a phone. It drops calls quite a bit and some places it is hard to get a signal. DH has ATT, but not the Iphone. Pretty much everytime I don't have a signal, he still has one on his phone and can make calls easily. Also, he never has dropped calls with his phone.

yeah, if that doesn't fix it, i'd ask to try an iphone 3gs. if that doesn't do it then i'd drop it. if you have to change out the phone i'd document it and ask that you want another thirty days to give this a try.

I have the iPhone 3g....and while I really do love the phone, I always keep it on the "Edge" network as it regularly drops calls on the 3G network. And I live in a very populated area (NJ), and not out in the sticks.

Coverage in Manhattan is terrible as well.

The second that Verizon finally carries the iPhone I'll drop AT&T.

I can't speak to the iPhone 4, but the 3G coverage for the AT&T network sucks. I have the iPhone 3g and unless I have it on the Edge network it drops calls.

I know this is a Iphone thread but I'd like to suggest looking into the evo. I chose evo because I had the iphone and I wasn't getting good signal. I get 4g in my house and I love it. Granted there was something a little more saucy about my Iphone but I love my evo now.

I have been waiting forever for Verizon to get the iphone. I would love to have one but ATT is terrible where I live. I dropped it several years ago for Verizon and have no problems at all. I currently have a Droid and I like it just fine but if Verizon gets the iphone then I will drop it in a heartbeat

Mine is a 3GS. I don't know if the Iphone4 is worse or not, but if it is...yikes!

I keep hearing about the dropped call issue.
Since I have gotten my Iphone 4 ... my first one :thumbsup2, my reception is even better than my black jack I had for about 3 years. Had the phone since first week of Aug, dropped my first call last week .

I hope you get your issue fixed, the phone really is great !

After YEARS of only having a basic prepaid cell I finally got an iphone4 and absolutely LOVE it! But with that said I absolutely HATE AT&T's coverage and I am now thinking about getting out of my contract within the 30 day grace period. I really don't want to but I'm dropping numerous calls everyday and have start answering my calls by saying... I just switched cell providers and am having trouble if I drop your call I'll call you back. Which isn't cool when my cell also doubles as my home phone.

Has anyone else been in my shoes and had AT&T improve their service for them? There technical support team keeps claiming that they can do things to improve my service (something about Centinial's towers) but so far nothing has worked. I just would like to know if they are blowing smoke for the next 30 days or if they really can help improve my signal strength. Like I said, I really love my iphone and would hate to give it up for something else but if it's no good for phone calls then it kind of defeats it's purpose.

You need to get the bumpers that Apple is providing for free right now. The dropped calls are known as the Death Grip. Your hand is interfering with the internal antenna of the phone. Apple is aware of this problem and wants all Iphone 4 users to get the free bumper for their phone, which will rectify this issue. You can order it from the Apple website.

I had an iPhone 3g for at least 2 years and had wonderful service in my home. When I upgraded and activated my iPhone4 the signal dropped to NOTHING.

I would get a bar and try to make a call and it would go back to no bars (I wasn't touching the phone as I knew about the death grip problem).

I tried it for 20 days and didn't make ONE call from my home. Downgraded to a 3gs and problem solved. My bars went right back to where they were with the 3g.

HUGE disappointment!

We do have the bumper and we have replaced the sim card. on the phone now with att and they say it is probably an equipment issue and should replace the phone. one last try before we move on i guess.

If Att isn't working then you should rly get out before those 30 days are up. They raised their ETF to $350 ish now so imo it would be insane to keep that phone any longer.

To the PP who said if Att is telling you their working on it? Srsly? It would depend on who says it but remember those who you talk to on phone are just ppl within a HUGE organization....So 99% of them have no clue whats going on. So tbh take that advice with a grain of salt.

This being a budget board and coming from someone who hates wasting money I rly think you need to get the best thing for your situation and if calls are dropping and this service is frustrating you then you need to bail out before they sink their 2 yr long hooks into you.

Others have mentioned Android phones...Samsung Galaxy S line of phones, currently on all providers are a whole bunch like the skin of the iphone. I personally don't own one atm, but I def think that this line of phone is something to look into and play with if the iphone type phone that you want.

Good Luck! Keep us up to date with what you did because I'm the nosy type. :)

once I got the new case, I have less dropped calls.

But overall, been disappointed with the coverage, people say they can't hear me

There is a reason for AT&T's less-than-spectacular coverage in New York/New Jersey...

The present-day AT&T was (most recently) the former Cingular, which was stitched-together from a number of smaller cell phone companies such as SNET and Cellular One.

Verizon, OTOH, was the former Bell Atlantic Mobile, which had been in both NY/NJ for many years (and had the opportunity early-on to build the kind of towers they wanted -- not to "inherit" them from other carriers).

Rumor has it Apple has ordered CDMA chipsets for a next-generation iPhone (for those not in the know, Verizon uses CDMA chipsets in all their phones).

" I just would like to know if they are blowing smoke for the next 30 days or if they really can help improve my signal strength"

This is likely what they are doing. The Airave type device to hook into the net would solve problem at home but then what about outside of the house? Plus like you said they should be giving that up for free if the coverage is bad in your area.

I would say keep using and make sure you have enough tests out of it to be sure that this service isn't working and its something you won't want to revisit for a time before you make your final decision.

Also keep in mind that Att has a data cap now and idk which plan you have but keep an eye on what it is.

Possibly check out mobile speedtest app to see how fast the Att data is in your area. Smartphones are mini computers in your pocket and if you plan to use it as such then you should take full advantage of what you can.

I think traffic is probably another issue for them. Sadly they were overloaded with Iphone users and didn't have the proper equipment to sustain the added numbers to their towers.

The rumor is possibly true but their are cdma towers elsewhere also. Imo it could be for a Chinese phone that is going to launch.

My guess would be that they will honor their contract till 2012 and then maybe break off. Rumors constantly around saying iphone going here and there(Most recently yesterday saying T-Mobile)

My thinking is we won't see iphone on Verizon until LTE is at least partially deployed. But thats my predicting. I am sure there are few ppl who rly know how it will play out.

I see Google catching up quickly though and possibly may have already passed Apple in this market. Apple might just make a play and drop their contract to open up to other carriers.

The thing with Apple is they keep closed systems and most carriers are the same way. They want some of their bloatware on the phone. Could be a big reason why they haven't gone to anyone else yet. Now with a major competitor idkw they will do.

I guess to sum up is I would not be basing your future on rumors mentioned on the internet. :)
