Question. If I have an MSR, half of which I can do immediately, but I still need several hundred and I need to bonus asap, can I book a fully refundable flight on SW and then cancel it, once I have spent enough to cover that part of the spend? Does that make sense LOL?

If it's Chase, it's fine. I'd be more reluctant with Amex. If it's Amex, don't make it the transaction that pushes you over MSR.

Is there any reason to not book via Chase Portal for your rental car? It's so much cheaper than any other place for Ireland!

I just looked at Chase and the prices were pretty similar to when I booked our car. I have a 1 way rental (DUB->SNN) booked direct via Enterprise. IIRC, you are going around St Patrick's day so maybe that's the difference (we go in June).

Being significantly cheaper makes me wonder if it's not including some mandatory insurance? I don't know what's required in Ireland. Recent horror story, but in Mexico. Link

Ireland is supposed to be covered by Chase and Amex coverage, though you have to get a printed email from them w/in 30 days of your trip for the rental agencies to allow you to decline their coverage. I do think it's a little risky -- I read a horror story about some minor scraping to a car and the rental agency charged the value of the car until they got an estimate. And the CC coverage doesn't cover until the estimate. I know it sounds ridiculous , but the post at Trip Advisor posted a number of times and was completely freaked out about having to pay off her CC bill while this was all getting worked out. If it wasn't true, someone wasted a lot of time posting about it (reminds me to go check that thread for any updates).

We haven't decided if we're going to rely on the CC coverage or not. I think it'll add about $300 if we use the rental company's insurance.

It's via budget through the chase portal it's like $500 cheaper than I'm getting searching on budget, etc. AutoSlash has a lower rate too, but booking via priceline which I'm more sketch about using, LOL. I still have some time. I did look at just having the car for just 2 days, and dropping it in Galway, but I think it's more expensive.

Google has failed me. Is there a list somewhere of the countries the CSR car ins works?

Have you tried Auto Europe? I've rented from them before in Europe and remember finding their insurance info particularly clear.

Well, this is clear lol. Link to guide to benefits in case you don't have it. Link

"This benefit is available in the United States and most foreign countries. Coverage is not available where precluded by law, or where it’s in violation of the territory terms of the auto rental agreement, or when prohibited by individual merchants. If you have questions about where coverage applies, contact the Benefit Administrator before You travel."

Yeah that was what I was finding just surprised there's not an actual list. Like what if I book and budget now cause it's included and then next Aug they say oh no japans not included. It's like 30 bucks a day to add ins, at least on budget. Still trying to figure out who to rent from and may just do them as it seems like it would be easier potentially than a japanese company.

I'm going back to The Maldives next September for 4 nights at the Ritz Carlton. I wasn't planning on visiting again, let alone this soon, but why not?!!! It will be a relaxing vacation with time to decompress by the ocean and pool before taking on the rest of my vacation.

I was lucky enough to book first class on Emirates A380 from Toronto to Dubai, then the 777 from Dubai to Male (also first class). Points (160k) were transferred from AmEx -- happy to finally use some!

From Male I'll fly to Doha, then on to Copenhagen (Qatar first from Male to Doha and biz to Copenhagen booked with Avios), which was my original plan for next September. From Copenhagen I'll go to Bergen and Stavenger, Norway, then to Stockholm, Sweden and perhaps Helsinki (via the overnight ferry). I'll have to see how my itinerary pans out (I have yet to book my return ticket home). I'm excited for this trip as I've wanted to visit Scandinavia for quite a while.

Since it says "most", I would be shocked if Japan is excluded. I was thinking along the lines of North Korea, Cuba, or Iran. But doesn't hurt to call to double check.

Any recommendations for a Hilton property in Fort Lauderdale? I have a couple of FNC to use. One expiring at the end of the year. We did Bakers Cay earlier this year in Key Largo.

Ahh. This sounds really nice. We love visiting Norway. Be prepared for some cold weather of course, but that's just normal there.

The United biz has a high SUB with high spend. It's tiered, 150k for $20k spend, or you can just do 75k for $5000. Opens up expanded award space. Having both the biz and a personal United card gets you 5000 anniversary miles.

DH used to have the United Explorer. That's at 70k for $6000, or just do the first tier at 60k for $3000. AF waived first year. His card hit a year, so I had him downgrade to the no fee Gateway. It seems to have kept the expanded award space. I can see XN and JN space, but there's no longer a note that it's exclusive space available to card holders like there used to be, so I was very confused at first.

Thanks for the info. DH has been looking at the biz card lately, but we keep going back and forth over whether it's worth it or not. I knew about the 75k for 5k, but not about the larger SUB (too bad, since we just had a big home repair expense last month).

This article has someone's experience and a lot of info. It says many quotes you get with .ie on the end already include the insurance, but they got a letter from Chase showing they had insurance and were able to decline it. (The article isn't dated however)

We had a similar experience to this in the UK this summer, except we didn't need the Chase letter, but had a very hard sell about being responsible for the full value of the car, etc. I managed to stand firm and refuse it to rely on Chase. They do put a large hold on your credit card if you decline. Luckily the car they gave us had several well documented scrapes already, so the one we added blended right in.

Can we downgrade a CSP to another Chase UR card via SM? P2 was able to get both the CSP and the CSR last year and we only want to keep the CSR. Thanks!

I am pretty sure that you need to call to downgrade, because they need you to agree to the new terms and conditions. At least this was true in the past--perhaps someone here knows if that's changed recently.

Yesterday when I looked at our DUB-SNN rental, there was a little line that said something about a 1 way rental fee of $30 that is payable at the rental desk. Of course, everything I'm typing is just conjecture since I haven't gone yet. But my recollection is that the difference for my rental if it was returned to DUB was a minimal difference (at least at the time I booked and the dates I'm using). LOTS of Trip Advisor folks recommend renting or returning in Galway and taking public transport to/from Dublin and 100% of people say not to rent your car in DUB if you are staying there for even a day -- driving and parking are a pain. They recommend getting your car when you leave DUB.

I keep rolling my eyes at the cost of our 2 week rental, but then remember we spent $800 for a week in Montana this summer. Even if we add insurance from the rental agency, it'll be less than double that for twice as long.

I had to cancel the hotel reservation I made through C1 travel, and the refund has already credited to my Venture X account! (Based on some other comments I've seen about C1 travel, I feel like I got pretty lucky!) Of course, that means I still have to find something else to book/purchase through them so I can make use of the travel credit... Ugh. I'm sure I will find something. And I need to get my husband's GE application done so I can make use of THAT also!

Next weekend we are riding to SF so my husband can take part in a civilian/PD motorcycle competition. We are booked at the BW Cartwright hotel and the only card I have an BW offers on is the AMEX BBP so I guess I shall use that.

Anyone super familiar with cruising out of San Diego? We have a cruise out of there next month, and we are trying to figure out where to park our car for the week. I am hoping we can just park it at the airport... anyone know for sure?

Who'd you go through again? We are going to sleep for a few hours and then leave Dublin to Cork. Day 2 is Cork to Galway. And from there it would just be back to Dublin. So maybe I'll look again at rates.
