Does the card you’re cancelling have an annual fee? They might want you to talk to retention and may even have an offer for you to keep it open.

yes it’s the Amex Hilton Biz

So I just got off chat. They asked what other card I was using to point out how many points I can earn with the Hilton biz on things other than travel. I then said "yes, but the points would be used for travel, which isn't happening much these days." So it was hard to justify the annual fee. Then I decided to straight up ask if they could waive the annual fee for a year.
She said she couldn't do that because it came with the card, but "because they value my loyalty" she could offer a $50 statement credit. No spend required. So I said ok to that.
I'm ok with basically now a $45 annual fee and hope it helps me with avoiding Amex pop-ups in the year to come.

whyyyyy are they giving me a hard time then ? Ugh

DH has the same card and was going to cancel it, but of course was worried about getting a pop-up, too. AMEX just straight out sent him an email for the $50 credit when it was time for him to either pay the AF or cancel, so he kept it. Glad you were able to get the credit - I wonder why it didn't come automatically though. Well, whatever it takes to keep them happy!

*sigh*

guess I just got unlucky.

ECCA? (End chat chat again)?

I'm watching the debate tonight because it is taking place on the campus of my alma mater. I've got a bottle of wine chilling for the occasion. A lot has changed since I graduated in 1985; I don't think the building they are in was even built when I was there. I did live across from the emergency entrance to the hospital one year, lots of ambulances arriving, but my apartment building has been consumed by university/hospital sprawl.

:) Another version of HUCA! Good luck!

Ladies and gentlemen... we are definitely back in business! :D :D

And... I am celebrating with my 90th card (between me and my wife) since we began churning over 6 years ago!

I'm not one to post anything explicit these days about my churning efforts, but one could say that my earning potential is Unlimited with this card ;) ;)

Is the annual fee worth it? This would be my card. I just got a job within the last month. And I don’t really know much about annual fees on CCs.
Thanks for all your help.

Well, the first thing is the annual fee will keep coming each year you have the card, but if you spend enough on it, sometimes they'll give you a retention offer and either waive the fee or part of it.

Reading back, it appears you are new starting out and an authorized user on a couple of your parents' cards? Forgive me if I've misunderstood this? And you've just started a new job?

You were probably on the right track to apply for either the Discover or Chase card. Once you've established a bit more credit, there's nothing wrong with applying for a few more cards that will help you get points and travel credits.

Having a good credit score when starting out is a good start and the fact that you were authorized user probably helped the score. But, now that you are looking for cards under your own credit, do not let yourself become an AU on any other cards - in future it will prevent acquisition of more cards.

Anyway, since you have some credit already established, you could try the Alaska card. Getting the bonus and using the card for a couple of years is a great starting point. If you don't get approved, try one of the others. @afan is more of an expert on the PNW and Alaska, so whatever she said is on point.

Well isn't THIS a timely email, based on what I tried to do this morning

528826

I cannot get the Chat feature to work (it just spins forever) using either Edge or Brave.

From my phone, going to the actual website, chat isn't there at all!

I was only able to do it this morning from the Amex app.

Is that weird?

Hi everyone, I asked a question a while back about chase freedom unlimited or discover it cash back. I’ve been doing some more research about what I can do with chase rewards. We live in the PNW so the best flight to MCO is from Alaska air. My question is, it seems chase doesn’t offer Alaska air in their rewards center and I’ve heard that you don’t want cash back because it doesn’t pay back much. So should I go with the discover card instead? It seems to make more sense to me, but I would appreciate some more experienced thoughts.
There are two ways to use Chase UR for travel. Book through the Chase portal or transfer to partners. In order to transfer to partners you have to have one of the Chase UR cards that have an annual fee. Now that Alaska is becoming part of the OneWorld Airline Alliance you would be able to transfer UR to a couple of different partners and use their frequent flyer programs to book Alaska flights. If you're just starting out you may want to get the Freedom Unlimited or CFU and just bank the points until you're offered a Sapphire Preferred or Reserve.

Hey Friends! In my normal fashion I keep up daily with the thread mostly on my phone, so don't comment or react as much as I would like. Trying to do little things that will make this winter easier, looking into a spin bike and trying to get in a new routine. My running watch is at the end of it's life cycle so looking into options, if anyone has opinions on any of these things feel free to message me or reply on the thread. I'm looking forward to a wreath workshop launch that will be a virtual event this year. I also have travel booked with hyatt and southwest points for the first full week of Dec, all refundable, just have to see where things are at, but happy to have something booked and to look forward to.

Applied and was accepted when the flex became live, happy to have a new card, but disappointed I missed on the more recent positive news with chase, right now I'll wait three months and if things still look good apply for one of the variety. Probably better to have the 5% back on grocery stores for the next year... It does pay to call Amex in regards to retention offers, I have the SPG bus (and did not receive a retention offer on two other Amex's earlier this year) and had option of 50 statement credit or 5,000pts and 10,000 pts after 1k spend (rep did their best to sell the points-the 5k pts are worth the 50 dollars...). Wish all of you well!

The building is brand new, a joint Cleveland Clinic/Case Western Health Education building. I was just there last week as my mom was in the Clinic from Tuesday-Friday. It was already a zoo on Friday when we checked out with roads closed and cops/security everywhere. It was a mess trying to park. I told her we were springing her on Friday no matter what the doctors said, lol. My sister works at the CC and I know she was concerned about getting in and out this week, but she didn't mention it today so maybe it wasn't as bad as she feared. Though she sent us a video of temporary fencing, double layer, all the way around. The CC is huge, like 10 city blocks, so that was a lot of fencing.

Eta - my view of the sunset from the parking garage the other day.

Thank you all for the replies. I think I will go with the cfu, then when I build more credit look at Alaska. Is there anything I need to know about when I apply?
:tink: Your approved..if you live with other people they ask for household income so you can use those their income as well

Made the difficult decision to cancel our Oct trip. The excitement of anticipation is just not there. I don't know if it is too short notice, but I did ask David's if they could list my BWV studio on their dedicated reservation page. Anyone want to go Oct 17-21, it may show up! Now I really wish I had cancelled my AP for a refund. It's good till early March now, but who knows if I will get there in Feb even?
We also canceled our Oct trip. We have Spring Break booked, but who knows how things will play out. Of all of us, my DH is taking it the hardest. He's the hard-core Disney fanatic here.
