We also have order writing privileges for TF and PN once consulted. The docs cannot order PN even if they want to, it is dietitian/pharmacist managed. Even if not consulted, we can order diets and supplements. It is a nice level of independence which is why I hesitate to go elsewhere because it is not like that every where. Our food service is self op, and while not terrible, I don’t get a lot of complaints anyway since most of my patients are not eating. On Saturdays, we alternate and cover the whole hospital and then I hear more. Are there really 3 dietitians in this thread? That’s kind of crazy lol.
I’m with you on the nutrition support. Working in a gym sounds like my own personal idea of he**.
At my hospital, we have order writing privileges, so I get to order all my own tube feeds and TPNs and the surgical interns I work with are very happy for me to do so. It’s a nice little level of independence. And most of the surgeons I work with understand that I know what they’re talking about and talk to me as as such, not like I’m the lunch lady.
of course, I work for the hospital and we have a food service management company that I do not work for, so whenever I get a good compliant I can easily say I’ll inform the manager of that department and I have nothing to do with it.
