Repercussions of cancelling Amex Platinum within 12 months? // submitted 9 hours ago * by strygun
Hi all. I've received a targeted welcome offer for an Amex Platinum to receive 70,000 MR points after spending $5,000 in 3 months. I currently have the CSR and love it, and don't really intend to make the Amex Platinum my primary card.
However - my boyfriend is moving to Paris for 9 months, and I'd love to transfer the MR points over to Air France for a ticket. My issue is that I read in the fine print that if I cancel the account within 12 months, they "may" take away my points (and I imagine, somehow charge me for used MR points).
Two questions: a) is it worth it, and b) do they charge the $550 annual fee up front, or 12 months from now? If b, can I cancel before the fee and keep whatever points I've used?
Update: Per your advice, I found 100,000 MR welcome bonus on CardMatch and took it.

I always cancel my cards after a week. I don't even meet the MSR any more. Churning isn't about the points for me anymore, it's about the high of the "you're approved" screen.

This is especially true with the Amex Plat! Amex overnights this ninja star of a card to you on a luxe wood block in beautiful packaging. There’s the real value! Screw spending $5k +$550 I don’t have to get some fake credit card points. Once you get the card, cancel the account before the annual fee is due. No money out of your pocket. Hold on to the card and packaging as long as you need to get your high. Then sell it all on eBay for $30. Easy profit!

That gives you just enough time to get that sweet metal.

Oh I just want to sniff it all in... I'm going into convulsions just thinking about it!
