I'm not
@BamaBoy but my parents have lived there for 18 years (I think). They love it and I'm having the darndest time trying to convince them to move to paradise (Pensacola) before something traumatic happens and it will be a big pain to move them (sigh, parents).
They like it because it has a large segment of educated people (not my judgment, theirs)-engineers, NASA geeks, university folks, etc as well as a small military base (arsenal) and resulting military facilities-pharmacy, commissary, etc. It has four seasons, albeit not as cold as the North/Midwest gets and for big medical needs, Nashville (Vanderbilt) isn't too far away, nor is Birmingham. There are some arty things they enjoy (sorry, not my interest so no idea what) and again, Nashville is two hours away so DF can go up annually and watch UGA beat Vandy.
Although they are obviously older, there also seems to be a lot of young families in Huntsville as well (mom is always babysitting or doing MOPS classes). If you like (pork) barbeque, it's good for that (although, ahem, barbeque is beef, obviously).
Clearly, I'm no expert but they've lived all over the world and this is the longest they've chosen to live anywhere (and they were 2 small town Midwest folks in the day). So it might be worth consideration.
