But I have always wondered why....

Why cant people who have successfully rented from someone here on the DIS report that the rental went fine and name the DISer? I have been reading the rental board and see a lot of transactions going on, mostly behind the scenes.. nobody wants to hash out the details in public it seems, anyway, but rarely does anyone post after their trip....

I know a couple of regular renters have references if asked, but why not have a reference section here on the DIS.... we have hotel reviews, restruant reviews.... why not DVC point renter reviews?

Just wondering....

Thanks bunches...

With restaurant reviews and room reports, the goal is to stick to factual information based upon individual experiences. Yes, these report do sometimes morph into debates / discussions, but those are the exception to the rule. And, since none of us really has a vested interest in compelling people to visit our favorite restaurant / resort, there's no reason to be dishonest in reports.

With rental reports, someone with the proverbial "axe to grind" could really make a renter's life miserable. You could also have people registering under different IDs just to give themselves fraudulent positive reports.

I think having such a board would just be an invitation to chaos.

The couple of times that I rented points from a member, I told both that I would be happy to serve as a reference, and have done so a number of times.

I agree with tjkraz.

I haven't any problem with my renting - but I was trying to sell another timeshare - and the person I was trying to sell it too - wanted the moon and then some.....

So I am going to give it to a charity instead.

Now I can understand wanting more, more, more information it was a big contract - it was quite small.

I tend to follow the trend here. The logistics of such a board would be very hard to manage.

I'm in agreement with the other posters, as well. However, I have been renting a few of the banked points we received when we purchased our contracts and have been amazed at the number of folks trying to rent points points lately. A number of the members who are renting points have very few posts to their credit and it makes me wonder if they truly understand the ins & outs of the DVC point system, banking, etc. It's taken us 9 months to get to the point where we feel comfortable with the system!

What's worse yet, I've noticed some members who preface the points they have for rent with a statement like "I"m new at this so I hope I'm doing everything right"! If I were interested in renting points from a member, this wouldn't exactly give me the "warm fuzzies!"

I'm not sure where anyone would get the idea that such comment is not welcome on the DIS. It is welcome and has been done many times. The DVC Community Board is now the best place to offer such comment about a rental .

Since the Rent/Trade Board is not a discussion forum, those comments are not appropriate for that board, but praises for good transactions (by both members and renters alike) are very much appreciated.

Comments about negative experiences are also appropriate as long as the discussion is generic. Since the DIS will not get involved in settling any dispute (nor will DVC) between a member and renter, we will not allow any accusations made using names of the parties, but discussion of the issues involved is definitely welcome and has been in the past.

If you've been involved in a successful rental, please feel free to make comment about your experience.

Enjoy!

I used points to book the member cruise. I would rather have rented out points and booked with cash, but I was simply too hesitant to do so because I don't know how and even if I got through the logistics, I was afraid I would have a bad experience with the renter. I like your idea. Of course, we wouldn't want to use names without the person's consent. And if only the positive reports were reported, it would keep out any bad coomments about people we might want to avoid renting to in the future. Maybe any negative comments could be handled through PMs.

Just some thoughts. I would love to see a reference-type forum that would help me and others be more comfortable with the renting process.
