Hi all-

Myself and a few friends are going to run the WDW 1/2 marathon in 2010. One friend has done the DL 1/2, but none of us has done WDW. We have done some research, but I have questions (of course)

Is there any discounts for staying on site during the marathon weekend? I suspect not, but thought I would ask.

Staying onsite is key for us. The buses will take you to the race. I understand you need to be on a bus by 4am, is that correct?

How do most people feel after running the race? Are you able to do a park or parks later that day? We are going to be leaving the following day for a cruise as well, so I will have plenty of time to relax.

What types of things do they have on the course like water/gatorade/fruit/gels etc?

Are there a lot of older folks who run? My FIL may want to run (he runs faster than I do!) and he will be 67 next September. He is in great shape and has run a 1/2 before, so this would not be new to him.

I am sure I will have more questions, but that is it for now. I am working on a training schedule, though outside running will be tough here in upstate NY soon. I am thinking of joining the running group at the Y to do some running too.

I am really excited about this-2010 is my 40th bday and this is something I have been wanting to do. I am finally ready to take on the challenge!

Hi veronica---its never too early to think about the race! Let me see if I can answer some of your questions:

I don't know of any discounts that are available during marathon weekend-but if there happens to be any, I am sure somebody here would tell us about it.

Last year for the full, I got on a bus at 4am...but some people will say you don't have to go that early, I have heard people say they get on a bus as late as 5am. I didn't want to have to worry about anything so I got on the bus at 4am and just relaxed when I got to Epcot.

As for after the race, I went back and took an ice bath and we headed out to the parks right after the full last year. I actually think it is good for you to get out and walk a bit after running. It will all depend on how you feel, but I think you can definetely do it, and it is a great feeling walking around the parks with your medal on!!

There is water, and powerade at all the water stops along the way. I am not competely sure about the others for the half, but somebody here will know better.

There are all sorts of people that run these races. There are people of all ages, runners, walkers...you name it you will find it!

Hope this helped, I am sure others will have some more answers as well.
Good Luck with your training!!

Oh my...I just figured out that my 40th birthday will be just about 10 days before the 2010 WDW marathon. Sounds like a great 40th birthday present.
I think I'm going to start exploring this as well.

Good luck with your planning and training!!

The 08 program showed Clif Shots at mile 10.1 as the only thing other than water/Powerade. The Marathon has bananas and candy at different aid stations. I think after some rest right after the race, you should be ready to hit the parks and this will help stretch out your legs. Usually we rest as we have done the 5K the day before and have the Full the next day after finishing the 1/2 as part of the Goofy(or Dopey).

The post race massage at the finish line is only $10/$20(10/20 min) really helps us get ready after the half for the full. The same could be said for a day at the parks after the 1/2.

Thanks for the replies. We are all really excited about doing this. Another question: is your time calculated from when your chip hits the start to when your chip hits finish or does it go by when the timer starts to when your chip hits finish? I have done many 5ks locally that use chips, but the times are calculated by when the timer starts to when your chip hits the finish line. Not that it matter much, as we will all have a watch/chronometer, but just curious.

Thanks for any and all help!

Hey Vern: Most chip timed Half Marathons will have a mat at the start, some in the middle and then one at the end. So your chip time will be YOUR official time! I have seen this at some 10ks and 15ks and of course Full Marathons. Like you most 5k just use the starting gun as the start time and then the chip time for your finish.

I am excited for you doing the WDW half. This is a fun event and as you train with friends, WISH Team, family you know it will be that much better.

You have a good amount of time to get yourself strengthened and ready to conquer the event. Any way you can work toward the 16 min/mile pace is a good thing. I would recommend to work for at least 15 min/mile pace if you can. Anything faster builds in bonus time to enjoy the journey. There are picture opportunities along the way and if you take your camera you will have some fun memories!
