I am on a weight loss journey and I am definitely losing weight. My clothes are super loose, I see in the mirror that I'm physically being sucked in, my face is thinner but when I step on that scale --nothing. I haven't lost not 1 pound since I started. I even see my stomach getting flatter. Why won't the scale show my weight loss? :confused3

Chances are you are replacing fat with muscles which takes up less area but weighs the same. Looking only at the number on the scale without taking into account your body fat % isn't really looking at the complete picture.

If your clothes are fitting more loosely and you look better in the mirror that is all you need. I don't even own a scale.

Thanks FD. I must be literally replacing one for the other because the weight hasn't moved. It must take time. I figured that on those weight loss shows like Biggest Loser, it is supposed to come off steadily like 1lb per week or so.

First, what are you doing to lose the weight? Just diet? What kind of exercise?
Second, what kind of scale are you using? Are you sure it is accurate? And are you weighting yourself at the same time of day every time?
Third, how long have you been trying to lose weight?

Ok I started to lose weight as of July 5th (2 weeks ago). I do two cardio sessons a day (30 min in the morning and 30 at night). Diet has been 85% spot on. The type of scale I use is the one you see in the doctor's office and I usually weigh myself after working out.

85% could easily IMO put you more in a maintenance mode more then a weight loss / fat burning mode. I've used and was very successful with "body-for-life" by bill phillips I think?? In that one you eat 6 meals a day with a portion of carb and a portion of protein, and at least 2 servings of veggies a day. Last year from Jan - Jun I lost 60 lbs. I have restarted it just this week as a matter of fact since I had gotten lazy and gained about 25-30 back. It does take planning, especially with food / nutrition (that is true with ANY 'diet').

it is 6 days of exercise a week, ie m-w-f cardio / interval for 30 minutes then tu th sa strength training.. Sunday (or whatever day you choose) is your "free day" you dont exercise, and you eat whatever you want. seriously. the free day (improperly called 'cheat day' by some, but it's not cheating if it's built into the program) allows your body to a) no it's not in starvation mode, not that you get hungry with this program, but your body will know you have cut back on the carbs, and b) if you overuse free day, you will feel like crap, and realize that's really how you felt everyday, you were just used to it.

so.. there ya go.. my input. for good fat burn / weight loss IMO you've got to make sure you get your body into fat burning mode via proper exercise, dont overdue the exercise or your body will start eating away muscle and save as much fat as possible, and eat the proper and right amount of food. again, you dont feel hungry if you eat the proper complex carbs / protein.

best of luck to you, and remember any change in the right direction is a good change :).. just like running a marathon, each step, no matter how small is closer to the finish line :)

That is a really good point. I think for me is I'm more interested in making a lifestyle change than doing a diet and losing 60lbs. within a certain timeframe. I would rather go 85% than 100% so I guess my progress will be a lot slower. I don't want to gain anything back. I'm definitely losing (I lost a dress size already) but the scale is just not moving. Its weird.

well that program is set up 'for life' and it's easy to maintain.... if you want to.

You are doing the right things! Don't get discouraged! I would give yourself a few more weeks before worrying about why the number on the scale isn't moving. The way your clothes fit is so much more important than the number, and the number will move eventually. Also, making a lifestyle change rather than jumping on a diet is such a smart way to think. If 85% is what you can do, awesome! Maybe 100% will be your lifestyle at some point, but if 85% is progress for you, then keep it up! :thumbsup2

I've lost 60 pounds in the last 11 months by diet and running. My ONE suggestion, STAY OFF THE SCALE FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND KEEP WORKING AT IT!!!

I weighed myself every few days for a while and got frustrated. I stopped weighing for a month and lost 10 pounds during that time.

Good luck with your journey.

Those are great ways to see your weight loss! The scale is just ONE way we have of measuring things.

With the exercise being so new, something the people on the WW message board remind us of is that while your muscles are being worked like that, in order to heal themselves, they retain water. When I first included exercise into my weight loss plan, if I worked out the afternoon before weigh in my loss wasn't as good as when I wasn't working out that afternoon. After a few more weeks it went back to normal, as my muscles got used to it and were able to release the water.

Focus on what you're doing and what you're seeing, and just be patient. The weight loss will come; it can just take some time.

Agreed. At the very very most you should only be weighing yourself once a week, and at the same time in the same clothes with as few changes as possible. There are so Manu factors in day to day weight, you will get very frustrated. If you happen to be retaining water for a day, you may think you've gained weight and really get derailed.

You may also want to measure you waist as a guideline. You need something more tangible than "my clothes feel looser".

Hey, with trying to determine your weight the biggest mistake a lot of ppl make is to weigh themselves after a workout or at night. You need to weigh yourself first thing in the morning after using the restroom. Dont even drink a glass a water first. this will give you the best number and give you your real weightloss. remember one bottle of water is 2 pounds

Whoa! I never realized that a bottle of water is 2 pounds! It makes sense though now that I'm thinking about it... Thanks for sharing that fact!

well if it's 32oz bottle it's 2 lbs... which is a big bottle of water.. :goodvibes

Well, the exact calculation for 2 lbs of water would be 30.7 ounces. A fluid ounce doesn't translate exactly to a weight measurement of an ounce, but for water, it's pretty close. (I literally just did a density lab with my summer camp kids last week, and we calculated how many ounces of water were in a pound of water...promise I'm not a crazy person!) :)

I think the confusion is from weight resistance advice. Anytime an exercise calls for 2 pounds weights, it always says you can sub bottles of water if you don't have weights. I can see how someone could take that to mean a bottle of water is exactly 2 pounds.

I understand your pain! I went from 306lbs in Oct 2011 to 270 lbs in Jan 2012. Then the scale stopped moving. I tried eating less and exercising more. Still nothing. I didn't lose any weight until last week. Finally the scale went to 259 lbs. Yup I plateaued for 6 months. I still haven't figured out what I am doing wrong. I asked almost everyone I know for advice but nothing is working for me. Some said I'm not losing weight because I have too much stress in my life. But I can't kill my family off or quit my job! HAHA!!! I assume that eventually the weight will come off. My clothes are getting looser also and people keep telling me I look thinner but the scale doesn't lie.

Keep up the good work and it will happen for you, I'm sure.
