I knew that rates on the Auto Train would go up, but this is ridiculous!

I got a quote for the Auto train about 2 months ago - $852 for 5 coach seats and an SUV. I was told that the price would go up the closer it got to our travel dates, but I didn't want to book until I was sure about how I wanted to travel. I checked over the weekend - 4 weeks out - and the price had risen to over $2000. Flying is cheaper - cheaper than 5 seats to sleep sitting up in all night. I just don't get it. I think we'll enjoy the open road instead - I95 here we come!

and thats why i've decided to book now for our next summers trip. currently i'm getting a quote of 805 for 2 adults, 2 kids and a minivan. thats cheaper then jet blue. i'm hopeing it drops if they discount the kids tickets

I was afraid this might happen to us so I already booked us for May. The Auto Train uses price "buckets" and starts booking 11 months out, so when one price bucket fills it goes on to the next and so forth. Also, the fact that all but sleepers are refundable up to the day before (sleepers the week before) means that people feel comfortable booking early. I'm sorry this happened to you... Here's hoping you have a great trip down, anyway!
