Would you think it was OK to send your child to preschool with about 50 acupuncture needles sticking out of his scalp? Would you get mad if the school principal said you had to either remove the needles or take him home? Would you understand that these needles could pose a safety threat to your child and the others in the classroom? By the way, the classroom is for moderately to severely autistic children. Their judgement skills are not developed so any scenario (finding a needle and putting it in their mouths, pulling a needle from the child's head, etc.) is very possible. I thought I had seen it all in my job, but this one just had me scratching my head!:confused3

Every day's an adventure, huh?:confused3

Hard to believe that anyone would think that was ok!!!!

I think trying alternative treatments is great, but it's not a good idea to send a child to preschool like that! well, in my opinion. I try to be understanding and nonjudgemental but this is a safety issue. So no I don't think it's ok.

Ok I'll be judgemental for a split second, that mom is crazy to think it's ok!! I'd love to ask her how she thinks it would be ok!

Got to agree with all of this. ;)

Well I guess the director needs to add that to the rules of the preschool.

No students will be allowed to attend with visible needles because it poses a safety hazard for the classroom.

And people wonder why we are "ruled" to death.

No joke, as someone who works in schools, that will probably have to be added to the handbook. :rolleyes1

Okay, parents these days have gone WAY overboard in the "my kid is special" department and this is more proof.

May I ask why the kid has 50 acupuncture needles in their scalp?

Well, autism aside, I'd think this was a very bad idea on the mom's part. Seriously, this is preschool. Kids at that age have about as much common sense as a junebug. Who sends their kid to school with needles hanging out of his head? What a maroon...

What the heck? That's crazy. Double :scared1:.

Apparently, it's a treatment for autism. Some parents try alternative treatments, which is fine as long as they don't pose a danger to anyone.

When the dad dropped the child off and was questioned by the teacher, he said, "This is something we're going to be doing every week so you guys should get used to it." Then he literally bolted to his car. The teacher instructed one of her aides to take him to the principal who called the mom. When I happened by the nurse's office, the aide was sitting in there with him and she motioned for me to come in and look at his head. The mom arrived while I was still in the area and she said, "What's the problem? He won't pull them out. Just tell the other kids not to touch them." Huh? She has two autistic kids. She knows their sense of safety/judgement isn't developed, especially in preschool. You can't just tell them not to touch the needles. And you can't isolate the child in the classroom all day either. He simply can't be there in that condition.

This is a public K-5 school that houses our district preschool programs. I guess no one ever thought it was necessary to say "no scalp needles" in the parent handbook. I guess they'll have to reconsider!

That's crazy! I'm not familiar with acupuncture, but I thought a person stayed at the acupuncturist's office for treatment? I can't say I've ever heard of an adult walking around with needles sticking out of their head, let alone a child?

While I think it's cool that they are exploring that, I would bet $1,000,000 that the acupuncturist would be mortified that they sent him to school like that. (of course, I don't have that much money so anyone taking the bet would be sad if I lost)

I once left an office with ONE needle in the top of my head, discovered it about 2 hours after the appointment, and never went back to the guy b/c I felt that it was rotten that he forgot to take that one out. There's no way I would purposely leave with them there.

I think that the parents should make appointments on the weekends, or arrange for after-school appointments going forward.

I would say the mother's judgment skills are not well developed either. :sad2:

I have had acupuncture, and while I'm certainly no expert, yes, they put the needles in, left me to lie there for 30 minutes, then came back and took them out before sending me on my way. I would suspect the needles were put in by the parents, not by an acupuncturist, because that is just bizarre.

According to the classroom teacher (I work in another classroom), the mom was told by the acupuncturist to leave them in for 24-48 hours. She ended up pulling them out in the nurse's office rather than taking him home. The aide did suggest that perhaps Friday afternoon appointments would work best for them since he would not be allowed at school in that condition.

I once had a co-worker who had severe neck pain. Her acupuncture needles were placed under the skin and left there for several days. She showed them to me once. You could see the outline of the needle, but they were completely embedded in the skin. The little boy's needles were literally sticking out of his scalp. An adult or child could easily grab one and pull it out.
