Every single day it seems, I'm hearing about kids dying from the flu. I'm taing my kids in tomorrow to get their sesonal flu shots, but no word on the H1N1 shots for the base clinic yet. I need to quite waching the damn news.

My DS tested positive for the strain that is the swine flu (I forget the letter) and his Dr said it was probably the swine flu but it would not be confirmed.

He was sent home on a Wednesday morning from school because he was feeling bad and had a temp of 101.6. At it's peak, his temp reached 104.3. By Friday, it was down to 100 in the morning and then nothing by the evening. He actually played soccer Saturday morning.

Like anything else, only the "bad news" gets attention. You are only going to hear the tragic endings of people with swine flu. There are TONS of people that have had it and didn't die. Think of all of those people.

this is so true! the media just likes to freak everyone out, because it's their job to do so! actually as of july the most people who died from H1N1 lied within the 25-49 year old range.

the problem with swine flu as opposed to regular flu was that it struck at an odd time, over the spring/summer rather than fall/winter.

Yes, I understand that.. I was an adult with children of my own in the '70's..

What I'm pointing out is that with the traditional seasonal flu, the people who die from it are not in the age groups that we are seeing with the H1N1 flu.. Pregnant women in their second and third trimester don't typically die from seasonal flu - but they are dying from H1N1 flu.. Children from 5 to 19 don't typically die from seasonal flu- but they are dying from H1N1 flu.. Young adults from 25 to 49 don't typically die from seasonal flu - but they are dying from H1N1 flu.. That is why people can't compare it to the "seasonal flu" and/or assume that the numbers will be the same or the age groups will be the same..

The comparison doesn't fit.. Two different ball games - each with their own set of rules..

Oh, I'm talking about just the regular flu vaccine. It's nuts that they don't have it yet.. I know they did by this time last year! I'm a priority patient because I have pretty bad asthma and a heart condition. This is my first year as an MS patient as well and I'm on a mild immunosuppresant, so I cannot get sick. I've had to be hospitalized for the flu before and I don't want to get that sick ever again lol.

I just read that federal officials announced the vaccine will be free for all students aged 5 to 24. Not sure if they will still give it to you even if you aren't a student, but we'll see.

The federal government purchased (and paid for) the vaccine and will ship it to health departments around the country...I assume they will reimburse the feds and then whether it is free or not will depend on a local level. Honestly, I think they should just suck it up and give it to everyone for free. They spent so much on the stimulus, the least we should get is a flu vaccination.

OP please try not to freak out. We have had several people in our school system to have it and almost all that I have talked to (I am an assistant teacher) have said that the symptoms were very mild compared to seasonal flu. Our school district will be giving the vaccine to all school age children right in their home schools sometime in October.

Unfortunately, this year is in no way even close to a normal flu season. As you can see, from the CDC website, there are not usually many pediatric flu deaths.
