I have some questions about the Kansas City, MO area...

I was wondering if I could get some information about the outlying areas of Kansas City, Missouri. Any information would be helpful but I would like to know a few specific things:

What are the best towns to live in that are a commutable distance to Kansas City, MO? Why would you recommend living there?

Where are the best schools?

What is the weather like? Does it snow?

I live all the way across the state, so I can't give you KC specifics for most of your questions. However, this one I can answer: Yes, it snows.

I know there are some KC people on the DIS; hopefully they'll be way more helpful than I was.

well, it really depends on what you consider a reasonable commuting distance. If the actual job is in KCMO just make sure you avoid the KCMO school district, it's horrible. We personally live on the KS side of the city and the schools in Johnson County are all pretty good. Blue Valley, Shawnee Mission, Olathe, DeSoto and Spring Hill districts are all good. I don't know much about the MO schools but I think Lee's Summit has pretty good schools too.

KC metro area is very spread out. It takes about an hour to drive from south to north. Without knowing what part of KC the job is in it's hard to help more than that.

We have 4 distinct seasons and it gets cold in the winter and hot and humid in the summer.

I believe the job is close to Independence, MO. I was looking there, and also in Lee's Summit and in Liberty. I don't know too much about these areas however and I don't know if I am maybe passing over other communities around there that I should look into.

I think as long as you stay in Johnston County you will be fine.

I teach in Independence and live in Blue Springs. It is about a 10 minute drive or so for me to Independence, half an hour to my other job in Kansas city (Worlds of Fun). Blue Springs is a great town. The schools are top notch and there is so much to do in the area, plus it's a good area (not a lot of crime, well taken care of.) Lee's Summit is also a very good area, that is where my boyfriend lives. I'm nto sure about the rest of the area. Independence has some good areas and some not good areas. It really depends on what part of town you are in.

Of course I vote for the Kansas side. Great schools, neighborhoods--though I would stay away from the Kansas City Kansas schools. Stick with Olathe, Blue Valley, Shawnee Mission, DeSoto.

On the Missouri side, I would look at Lee's Summit, Blue Springs, and Liberty school districts. Definitely stay away from Kansas City schools, they are a mess right now!

If you want to be on MO side and close to airport, look at Liberty.

MCI is not hard to get to--we are in southern Johnson County Kansas and it takes us about 45 minutes. It takes about 30 minutes to go downtown, so to Independence would probably be about 40-45, depending on where the job is.

It does snow, but not like the upper midwestern states. Usually our snow is gone within a few days. We tend to get more ice. Worse is the heat/humidity in the summer. July and into August is usually in the upper 90's and 100's. We do have nice spring and autumn seasons.

My DSIL taught school in Blue Springs and my niece and nephew went to school with David Cook. Blue Springs is just east of Independance and it takes about an hour to get to the airport from there.

I would say yes it does snow!

I don't know much about the Kansas side when it comes to schooling but on the Missouri side definitely stay away from the Kansas City Missouri School District. Liberty and Blue Springs are good.

The airport is very easy to get to from just about anywhere. It is small and easy to get in and out of.
