I have several contracts all purchased on the resale market. I already had the benefits available prior to the April 2016 change. I have recently added on some points purchased direct.

What benefits do I have now that I previously did not have?

Nothing. Just what was available to you as a pre-2016 buyer.
Oh no, wait, you can use your small amount of points to exchange for Disney hotels and a few other services, but at a terrible exchange rate that nobody would recommend.

I realized that that came across kind of snarky, so I wanted to add these two extra pieces.
1. Double points for probably not that much higher than what resale was asking judging by today's market.
2. A small amount of insurance in case they change grandfathering rules. Doubtful, but you at least out yourself into an extra 'bucket just in case.

If your resale points were purchased after 2012ish, you can now book a Members Cruise. You do not need to use points for a Members Cruise, you just need to own direct points or resale points before 2012(sorry can’t remember the exact date).

As mentioned you've gained one main thing in that you'd now be able to book the member cruise (on cash as a small add on would not cover the point requirements). And that small contract could be used to book into the disney collection but those reservations are lesser value than a DVC room plus require a $95 exchange fee.

Is that enough for the cost or did you just need a few more points? I'm guessing you might still be within the 10 day time frame to rescind if there was something more that you thought would be gained.

As others mentioned, I basically just added on 25 points (as expensive as it was) as a "non-guaranteed benefits insurance policy"

If you're already grandfathered I wouldn't have added the 25 as any sort of insurance. If they decide to do away with grandfathering then the 25 direct won't be of use either.

I agree that is is not a necessary step, but it probably wasn't a terrible one as long as:
1. The price was not hugely higher than a resale of similar point value.
2. The points were purchased at a resort you wanted (not just slapping on Aulani just to get them)
3. The points were actually needed, and will be used frequently.
4. They can be resold at close to the purchase price somewhere down the line.

It's been stated that it was done just as an insurance policy. Sure, we can all use more points or rent out the excess, but adding solely as an insurance policy when the insurance policy is simply covering something that you're already covered for doesn't seem to make sense. If someone wasn't grandfathered already then absolutely.

But if they at some point needed to sell their original, larger contract for money, they would still have this 25 pointer to use for benefits. Not going to lie, this was one of many factors for us adding on back in December even though we were grandfathered. We like OWK, but wanted AKV points because we love it there. With our 25 direct points at AKV, if we decide to ditch the OKW after we buy our resale AKV we still get the benefits.

Excellent point!

As a Member who throughly enjoys going on DVC Member Cruises for the Disney information and experiences they provide, you can try one to see if you like them too!

Just got off the Wonder today, met new friends who were tablemates. They will be on their first MC this July.
