WARNING: This is a question about something in Toy Story 3. IMO, I don't think it is a spoiler, but some may think it is.

I can go back and watch the 1st two, but it's faster to just ask here. Where is Andy's dad? Was it ever said, or implied that his mom was a single mom? I just assumed dad was at work back when Andy was little, and mom was hosting his birthday party, or taking him to Pizza Planet, or organizing a yard sale. I never really considered that she could be a single mom. Yet, in Toy Story 3..Andy is going off to college, and there's no dad. It is very clear she is a single mom. Did we ever see dad in any of the other Toy Story's?

I'm just wondering, does Disney even know how to make a movie with two intact parents? I mean how hard would it be for dad to be there to send Andy off to college?

Other than that little question pestering me..Toy Story 3 was great! (Ok, I did have a problem with the use of subtitles in a rated G movie that pre-schoolers will be watching.) I would be lying if I said I didn't get choked up at the end.

I had once read that it was Walt Disney's doing, and it was because he had a hard time over his own mother dying.

For some reason Disney doesn't like kids having both parents. I guess it makes them more sympathetic.

I always assumed that Andy's mom was a single mom, from the first movie. I guess I figured, even then, that it was a sign of the times.

Wasn't Andy's mom pregnant in the 1st Toy Story? Molly was a baby in Toy Story 2. I think that is why I assumed dad was in the picture, just never home.

No, Molly was a baby in Toy Story. I always thought the mom was a single mom.

I always thought that she was a single mom as well.

I got a little teary myself at the end! Glad others did too! ;)

I had once read that it was Walt Disney's doing, and it was because he had a hard time over his own mother dying.

In the beginning, he was mainly using fairy tales. Neither Snow White nor Cinderella had a mother but did have evil stepmothers. Sleeping Beauty had both parents. Pinocchio had only a father. But the movies followed the same story lines as the fairy tales pretty much, I believe.

As for Toy Story 3, I'd always assumed Andy's mom was a single mom and didn't have a problem with it. It's pretty refreshing for a cartoon character to actually HAVE a mom who is alive and well! :lmao:

I had to look it up. :) According to Wikipedia---

Ms. Davis is Andy and Molly's mother. Although implied, it is not clear if she's a single parent, though background information such as Ultimate Guides to the Films indicate she's a widow. She originally had brown hair during her first appearance in Toy Story, but as of Toy Story 2, she is now seen with blonde hair. She is voiced by Laurie Metcalf. She briefly appears in the Toy Story 3 trailer in a picture of Andy's high school graduation ceremony and later on when she asks Andy what to do with the toys.

My 10 year old has asked me about Andy's Dad a ton of times!! I always say "I don't know"!!! :confused3 You can't get anything past him!!! ;)

I've wondered about Andy's dad too, I heard somewhere that Andy's mom is a widow, but I don't know where that came from. There is never any reference at all to him in the movies. I sort of thought there is no dad because it just wasn't really necessary. Another character wasn't needed and wouldn't really add to the story. And sticking him in TS3 all of a sudden just to see Andy off to college would have been weird.

I don't think in this case it's a Disney thing either. Toy Story is a Pixar movie and there wasn't much Disney influence there when the first Toy Story was being made.

He's dead, Woody is an old family toy (she tells that to AL in TS2) and I always assumed he was Andy's Dads and thats why Andy is so attached to him. Either that or the dad ran off with the babysitter, but since Disney is always killing off one of the parents I don't think thats the case.

I actually like the fact the Andy's mom is a single mom. So many of Disney's stories have no mother present. It's nice to see a Mom once in a while.

I also assumed she was a single mom becasue even when they moved she was alone.
I was also sad at the end of 3:sad1:

I too just assumed she was a single parent.

One thing that really made me sad was that on top of going off to college by himself (!) andy had to give up his childhood room! I know I know. Molly needed a bigger room but there was nothing left!

Plus as a mom i for sure would ahve driven my child to school! :)

Don't know (though I guess the widowed thing makes the most sense in financial terms), but does anyone else find Andy to be just a bizarrely saintly kid?

I chuckled to see what Sid ended up doing.

Sid was the garbage man (check out the skull shirt he's wearing - but it's very quick)
