I am an administrator for a group home that serves teenagers and young adults with Autism. I am on call this week. Tonite I had just gotten to sleep after a very LONG day at work trying to tie up some loose ends before the holiday when my on call phone rings to tell me that the third shift staff person has not shown up for work. So....I drag my tired self out of bed and off to work I go. I tried calling her only to get her answering machine. I called her home and her daughter said that she has not been home all day. So, now I get to work an all nighter after working a full day today. After working all night tonite I have to find some time to get a bit done in the office as I have a new resident moving in on Tuesday. ARRGHH!!!!!!

I hope she realizes what is in store for her when the house manager gets the message that she was a no call, no show for tonite. It just stinks, because if she is terminated guess who gets to work the rest of her rotation of third shifts??? ME! Being on call during the holidays stinks even more than being on call usually does.

at least you can terminate for this-the social services agency i worked for would'nt let us terminate for 'no show' until it was the 3rd day in a row they failed to show up-then it was'nt a firing it was a 'constructive resignation'

It will be interesting to see if she does get fired. This woman seems to have more drama and excuses than anyone else that I know of. We have a policy that states that employees are allowed no more than one unexcused absence per month. This woman know exactly how to work the system and generally does. We have had to change the policy to state that an unexcused absence includes being sick, and even if you have a note from the doctor because this woman ( and a few others in our agency ) can produce a doctor's note out of thin air. It is a shame that good hardworking employees are penalized because of a few who work the system.

I am so glad that I have my computer and that there is a wireless signal in the area....so I can at least DIS all night. It is helping to keep me awake. I am not an all night person by any means.

sounds like one of my former employees-we finaly wrote him up saying he could only get a med. excuse if he was seen personaly by and determined unfit for duty by a medical practitioner. his 'downfall' was calling in sick one day and claiming he was 'too sick' to even go to the doctors until a day or two later-h/r sent a couple of h/r people to his home who knocked on his door/rang the doorbell- and when they got no response called his number (cell phone)-they asked where he was and he stated 'at home sick', and when they told him they were in his driveway, noone was responding to their ringing of the door bell-could he come to the door so they could verify he was'nt so 'ill' that they should they contact 911 to assist-he hung up (was'nt at home). he was terminated for falsifying an absence statement.

We have someone at out office who has taken 78 days off this year. It is only possible for her to have 35 leave days so we are not sure how this person is still able continue to call in sick.

Ugh. I'm sorry.

NO MORE THAN ONE UNEXCUSED ABSENCE PER MONTH????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should be able to fire someone for a single no-show (unless they were hospitalized or something.)

Of course, my heart is breaking over the new resident moving in the day after Christmas. Must be wrenching for the families.

The one un-excused absence is what our board of directors recommended. We, the staff who have to deal with these situations, wanted to recommend immediate termination. I think we will get there in time. We have recently had a complete change in upper administration with a brand new Executive Director and Assistant Director. I have been in my position for 18 months and my equal for the homes that serve the adults is relatively new. We have 2 new house managers putting a house manager in each of our 5 homes instead of having 2 homes share one manager. That being said, we are tightening up on policies and creating new ones all to help the agency operate more smoothly.

As far as the resident moving in on Tuesday....his parents would have brought him yesterday if they could. He is very high functioning but has numerous behavior challenges. He had been in a boarding school in Tennessee, but his parents could no longer afford it. When we accepted their son, they pulled him out of school immediately, even though we told them that it may be a few weeks before the actual admission. Needless to say he is missing the structure of school and has not been doing well at home these past few weeks. They need him to be with us as much as he needs to be with us. Also, for many kids with Autism and with our kids in particular, once the holiday is over, it is over and we move forward. Decorations will come down during the night on Christmas night so Tuesday will be like any other day. It might actually be a good day for him to move in as he will be able to adjust to the house before having to adjust to a new school as well.
