I had sedation dentistry today!

Okay, I finally admitted it. I have a phobia about going to the dentist. It seems like every time I go it turns into $$$$. And if that's not bad enough you have to pay $$$$$ and have pain inflicted on you!
It wasn't bad at all. I got 3 fillings and a cleaning. The dentist's office gave me a pill to relax me about 1/2 hour before my appointment. When I got there I had something to relax me further via an IV in my arm. I was not completely out but I was feeling NO pain! With sedation dentistry you can have a good number of proceedures done at once instead of having to go back several times.
On the down side, it is not cheap ($350, which insurance will not pay for). But for someone who fears going to the dentist, it's wonderful!

I will pay whatever it takes to have my dental work without pain and fear. There are times that i have thrown up in the parking lot before procedures, due to panic. for the last several years my dentist has been giving me nitrous oxide(which I love!) and ativan or xanax prior to dental work. I even get it for cleanings. I take my soft blanket, my head phones and my drugs and off to the dentist I go.

When I got to the part at the end I had to laugh. You see, I'm not bothered by the dentist, but the thoughts of having an IV started would have kept me awake all night! I guess we all have our own concept of what's painful and what isn't

i have to get my wisdom teeth out and the only thing i'm worried about is the IV sedation! lol. i just don't like not being in control of my own body, that freaks me out more than anything.

how were you after the procedure?? were you coherant for the rest of the day?? i've heard some horror stories about people "not remembering anything" and "Getting sick from the stuff" and such. just wanted to see how yours went?

I had my 4 back molars taken out when I was 13 to make way for my wisdom teeth. They wanted to do this under two rounds of injections but I told them I'd wait for them to impact and have them done under general rather than go through that (I had a bad experience when I was 7 with multiple injections in the roof of my mouth...).

So eventually they agreed to sedate me. Little injection in my arm (no problem with injections anywhere but in my mouth!) and I was fast asleep. Didn't feel a thing. Woke up 20 minutes later, got up and walked out of there. No pain, no problem. Washed my mouth out with salt water every couple of hours for the next 2-3 days and it all healed fine.

They insist you a) don't drive home and b) don't go into work the next day but I felt absolutely fine. I went grocery shopping with my mother. I had soup for tea 3 hours after the removal. No sickness, no tiredness, nothing. I woke up feeling like I'd had a brief nap.
