I apologize if this has been asked but I got asked today by someone who just bought into DVC through resale and is already thinking about adding on. They asked me about the 11 month window. The ? they asked i don't have the answer to. Ok they wanted to know if there home resort is SS and they add on at VWL are they allowed to book VWL at the 11 month window even if they have to use points from the SS as well to cover the stay? I have no idea, hadn't thought about that before.

No. VWL points at 11 months at VWL and SS points at 11 months at SS

If a member is making a reservation more than 7 months from check in, only home resort points are accepted as payment for the reservation. In other words, if someone wants to book VWL in the 11-month window, they must have enough VWL points to pay for the reservation. If they want to book a longer stay than they can pay for with VWL points, once they are 7 months or less from the nights they want to add they can use SSR points to pay for those additional nights, subject to availability.

That's why people buy more than one home resort, for the 11 month booking advantage.

You can only book at your home resort at the 11 month window. If they want to use SSR points, they would have to wait until the 7 month window. They can start off with a split stay...using VWL points for the first part of their stay and SSR points for the remainder. When they hit the 7 month window, they can try to switch to VWL, and depending on what time of year it is....it can be easy or difficult.

In your example, if on January 1st they book December 1, 2, & 3 at VWL, then on January 4th they book December 4, 5 & 6 at SSR, can they call MS on May 1st and add December 4, 5, & 6 at VWL using SSR points since they already have the first 3 days?

I believe so...but I defer to the more experienced people on these boards. December is a very busy time for DVC members....so VWL may not be available, but they could always request a waiting list. One should also read up on the banking and borrowing rules, because depending on the amount of points one has, you can bank and borrow for a nice stay.

But if that does not work out...they would still have a few days at VWL during a wonderful time of year. SSR is a wonderful place also, especially with all of the new stuff going on there.

Some people will alternate stays each year. You could bank/borrow your VWL points and only use the SSR points one year, then use the VWL points the following year. That way you can book your complete stay at one resort at the 11 month window.

This is what we do sometimes, having small contracts at BCV and AKL, we bank and borrow to have enough points to book those resorts at the 11 month window. Then we use our other larger contracts at BWL and BLT to go other years or for cruises etc.

Owning multiple resorts, even if they are small contracts, really increases flexibility.

I bank/Borrow points to get the 11 month window.
AKV points for something like Value or Club level that are harder to get.
VB for high season.
Poly, well I'm not sure what season yet because they are still shiny and new!

OKW for cheaper rooms.

I will trade out OKW for somewhere like VGF!

You cannot cheat the home resort booking advantage. The 3 days with VWL points and then 3 with SSR.....you could never switch the points around unless there are rooms open during the 7 month window. If you booked a room during the 11 month window, the only way you can use another resorts points is to cancel and rebook. The problem is as soon as you cancel, someone else's wait list my take those rooms and you are left without a reservation.

That december scenario would be next to impossible to get with another resorts points. Dec 1-15th is one of the busiest DVC times and many of the resorts get booked up before the 7 month window opens.

Nope! The 11 month window is for home use only. they can book at their home window and get that reserved, then at the 7 month go back and add on - but you do run the risk of not being able to get the additional night. But - I've never had a problem with getting what I need. ;)
