How do I fix this? Do I have to call and cancel? There's only 6 days until our vacation. We've been so busy with house searching and everything!

Does anyone know if they will take a debit card?

I called Alamo and asked them for a first name change since it is my husband and said a short prayer. LOL :D They went ahead and changed it and kept my rate the same at 175.00 for 9 days. I am happy now! I couldn't justify the additional 10.00 because that would be 90.00 extra! I was on the phone for awhile but didn't mind it at all. They are very gracious!

Re Debit cards, normally check the rental company's customer service Web page where all will be answered to you for questions such as Debit Card use (see below for the answer to your debit question, straight from Alamo):

For the driver question, if you cancel, there is no guarantee you will get the same rate....it could be higher, it could be lower....

Before doing that you at least could call and throw yourself on the mercy of the Customer Service agent and ask for a name switch. Probably will not have any luck, as IIRC, all the T/C information says any change could result in a new rate, but nothing ventured....

You could also add hubby as a driver at the rental counter, which would fix your problem, but would cost $10 or more a day extra....possibly cheaper than a new reservation, though...

Usually you get some of the best rates right before you leave, so just insert your dates again and see if the rates are the same as what you reserved for. If they are, cancel and get a new reservation with your hubby's name. You didn't mention whether you got an Alamo Insiders account (free), if you haven't, you should and use your husband's info.

I have a similar issue, booked a car ages ago under my name, but now wanted another person in our group to be the one renting/driving. Rates have more than doubled since I booked, so I have my fingers crossed that there will be a drop before our trip and I can just rebook without having to call and beg customer service. Hope you get it resolved easily!

Just a few observations:

About 20-30 percent of the time I book a leisure rental, I will book it in my wife's name and then book a second under my name. It's a hassle (sort of), but my wife likes to drive and I hate to drive...but wifey only likes to drive in good weather. If it is going to be snowy, wet or windy, I cancel her reservation at the last minute and retain my reservation. Good weather, I cancel my reservation....works for us. But I always cancel the "second reservation."

In terms of last-minute price drops, they seem to be few and far between lately for me in the regions I travel. Rental car firms have been a bit dinged in the past several years and accordingly in general have shrunk their inventory as well as reduced staffing, at least according to the reports I have read in the business press. Which can mean fewer last-minute bargains.

Make no mistake, if there are cars on the lot and you make a last-minute pitch, there is a great chance of picking up a deal. But, in my experience the last couple of years, I am seeing more and more sell-outs of the particular vehicles I am willing to rent.

In the OPs case, there is nothing stopping her from going ahead and trying to make an online reservation right this minute under whatever name she wants, without touching the standing reservation that is in her name. If the reservation made right now is more expensive, I'd be tempted to go ahead and book it anyway (unless adding husband as second driver would be cheaper) as you never know what quote you will get later today, in the morning, or 49 hours from now.

Then, bargain with CS on the phone at your leisure.

The thing about car rentals, you can always cancel and it only takes a few moments to make an online reservation and only takes a few moments to cancel one.

In the case of ALLESONWONDERLAND, if rates have seriously doubled, it would most likely be much cheaper to just add a second driver to the existing contract (usually $10 extra per day). The second driver is always a nice option in my opinion....although seldom worth enough for me to want to pay extra for it.

Congrats!

Alamo is a quirky operation, but since they have become more closely aligned with National, their customer service seems better, but their prices higher LOL

Anyway, as you learned, sometimes those quick calls work like "Pixie Dust."
