For the past 3 weeks I have been calling the doctor's office in an attempt to get seasonal flu shots not even thinking yet about H1N1. Every week same story no shots. Many of my friends are having the same issue, but come to find out the doctors' office have flu shots, but they are only for children on Child Health Plus (NYS health insurance for children). I have to tell you I was a little more than angry.

Are you kidding me because I have private insurance for which I pay $300 a month and copays that I can't have flu shots and those on the state run plan can? Um let's see I pay taxes too and help fund child health plus and pay for my own insurance but nope can't give you those shots.

I don't blame the doctor because he will get in trouble, but NYS are you kidding me. For the 1st time in 37 years I was actually looking at real estate and teaching jobs in Virginia. My husband was shocked. I have lived in my house for my entire life and always said no way I am leaving, but NYS needs to get a grip here.

Ok so my rant is over and I will try again to find flu shots for the kids next week.

Some friends stood in line for 5 hours yesterday at a drug store to get theirs. Ridiculous.

in the office I work in it is no different. We have been telling people to call back for WEEKS! We are waiting to get more vaccine... I blame the media- scaring the you know what out of people!

Between that and watching people around drop like flies. We have a dozen friend who have it (probably h1n1, they are no longer testing.) And fear is rising in the rest. I think we had one case in the family. Hoping that the fact that no one else caught it means there is some immunity here. But as our doc says, that is just an educated guess.

I see so many trying to get it after they have probably been exposed, though. Does it do any good at that point?

And you have EVERY right to be angry:mad:

That is pathetic that welfare (you are on welfare if you accept taxpayers' forced donations) folks get to jump ahead of the line once again.

Wow. I guess I am really lucky, we have ours. My employer provides 2 free vouchers for the seasonal flu shot (for employee + partner) so myself & DH (went to Publix, no issue). For DS (6) I went to his pediatrician (again no problem, no co-pay).

Pediatrician did run out of the shot but DS received the mist & since this is his first flu mist he needs to come back in 4 weeks (appt alaready scheduled) & no issues. All my friends, family & co-workers have no problems getting the seasonal flu shot or mist down here in my neck of the woods ( So. FL) .Walgreens, CVS, Publix, even BJ's is giving them out. Either you pay $24.99 if no insurance or they run it through your insurance.

Wish you luck !

Hmmm...Florida has plenty of the vaccine available? Hmmm...a vaccine plus Mickey Mouse....hmmm...
"Vaccination World" anyone?

agnes!

Just got the vaccine at work yesterday, free to all employees. No shortage here in Florida that I know of.

Maybe Florida can ship some of the vaccine up our way :)

I feel like it is a ticking time bomb before 1 of the 4 gets something.....

I guess we will need to ride out the storm.

The first doses available in MA went to prison inmates.

I habve had to reschedule my ds's appointments 3 times ovre the last moth because our ped's office keeps running out of their stock. Now I'm on a call list, but I have been calling everyday to see if they got any moe in.

They are expecting the H1N1 to be in next week. My ds is on the priority call list because he's high risk, yet they couldn't put him on that list for the regular :confused3 Its so frutrating.

As far as the child health plus, its not all welfare recipients on that For the pp who mentioned it). There are people who do work, and pay taxes but still need that for their children, so I have no problems with them getting the shots. However, I do feel that it should be on a self come self serve basis, and when there is a shortage, those in high risk groups should be the first out of those, no matter their economic status.

Both of my kids are home with suspected H1N1 - they are not testing any more and the school and doctors offices are overwhelmed with sick kids right now. Doctors office is offering the regular flu vaccine only to kids under 5 at this time - I've been calling for weeks as well.

Doctor ordered fluids, plenty of rest - there just isn't much more they can do.

Since when is Child Health Plus welfare? Those people work and pay taxes.

Like others have mentioned, I've not heard of a shortage in FL although I do know that they are giving it to people under the age of 30 first since those older have probably already been exposed to the strain, according to some doctors.

I know at the University of Florida we aren't even doing testing anymore and students are told to just stay home if they think they have the swine as to not contaminate the clinic.

Not true.

And, from the same blog, note:

Unlike H1N1 vaccine, most of the seasonal flu vaccine in Massachusetts and other states is ordered and paid for by the private sector. Hospitals, pharmacy chains, private group practices, employers and others order large quantities of vaccine directly from the pharmaceutical companies. The specifics of the quantities ordered and the arrangements regarding price and distribution are not overseen by or shared with government agencies.

Have you looked here for a vaccine clinic near you?

If you don't live in Erie county, check your county's health department website.
