I find it sad that we live in a world where only the super rich are interested in space and sci fi

Same theme, different day.
OP, you presume too much about other peoples' interests. The people that moved into these fields (astrophysics, astronomy, whatever you like) didn't wait for anyone else to share their passion for it. And it's not that everyone in society is too distracted by pop culture (which, by the way, much of what you post about Space is based in pop-culture), it's very possible that others may be interested in other subjects that are also important.

To best cement this argument, Knight, please closely study the following video, which should satisfy all your queries:
Space: Explained

People struggling to survive, people working paycheck to paycheck, etc, (because instead of helping people out the billionaires are trying to one up each other in space,) don't have the luxury to think about this crap. It seems very shallow to me, and I think they should be ashamed of their greedy selves.
They're pushing the boundaries of science and technology, which will benefit all mankind. This is exactly the kind of thing Walt Disney would be doing if he were alive.

How does it benefit the kids suffering right this minute from hunger, starvation, death? It might benefit "mankind" but it certainly is not benefitting anyone but the wealthy and those employed by them right now. I believe we need to fix the mess on this planet first before we put more mess into the space around our planet.

My whole family is extremely interested in space and we aren’t super rich. 😬 We live on the space coast of Florida and get to watch rocket launches from our house. There are former astronauts on faculty at the college that my daughter recently graduated from. My son just interviewed for a job at SpaceX. He was also on the rocket building team in college. I find it all fascinating.

All the Billionaires have done so far is achieve suborbital flight. Alan Shepard did that in 1961. Although Shepard went 101 miles high, Bezos 63, Branson 51. I do not consider reinventing the same wheel as 60 years ago but only going half as far with it pushing the boundaries of science and technology

Update. Breaking news!! Spacex achieved orbital flight. Now they're up to 1962. But government money has been involved in Spacex. So you can't count them as fully private.

I don't know what you're talking about. I'm building a space rocket in my back yard. Just hasn't been covered in the media yet.
The Immodium Q36 explosive space modulator you ordered is available for pick up.

Men are going to Mars ...who cares if they spend their money to blaze the trail. It's pretty clear that private sector space flight is more capable and efficient than the old model.

Space exploration takes a crapload of money. The government has decided to fund other things. So, it's up to private citizens with a crapload of money. Otherwise, no space.

Star Trek isn't exactly real either

Only the super rich can afford space exploration, lol. But there are lots of poor (relatively speaking) folks who are 'interested' in space and sci fi. Just look around.

I find it sad that some think that only the super wealthy care about space and sci fi.
