What an incredible piece of filmmaking. Even if you don't agree with the opinions he expresses, you have to admire the techniques he uses to make his point.

actually, it was, aunt polly, though not in the way you obviously mean.

no flag waving, no "my country right or wrong", but such a glorious exercize of our basic Constitutional right to free speech. the Framers would be proud.

I think Michael Moore truly loves this country and the people who live here.

but somehow, I got the impression that he's not too fond of the current occupant of the White House. ;)

Yeah, I've always thought his comments about America committing so many acts of evil and oppression throughout the world demonstrated a real love of this country.

I really didn't know what I meant!:D I wasn't sure exactly what DD meant. I want to see it. I got outvoted with the people I was with last night and ended up at "Supersize Me" instead.

Have you seen the film, Brenda?

Moore's message in this film is that the people who have the fewest benefits in our society are the first ones to step up to defend our country. All they ask is that we not send them into combat uinless it's absolutely necessary. And we've failed them in sending them to Iraq.

No, but then again, I wasn't commenting on the film, I was commenting on Michael Moore and his alleged love for this country.

Moore's message in this film is that the people who have the fewest benefits in our society are the first ones to step up to defend our country. All they ask is that we not send them into combat uinless it's absolutely necessary. And we've failed them in sending them to Iraq.

And how exactly does that counteract his previous statements about America and demonstrate some true love for this country?

What I saw on the screen last night...

Moore hates that the people in power in this administration tell lies and half truths to the American people. Moore hates that none of the members of Congress actually read the Patriot Act before signing it into law.

Moore hates the poverty and unemployment that plague towns like Flint, Michigan. Moore hates that the Saudis own 7% of this country. that the aims of multinational corporations take presedence over the needs of the average American.

Moore hates that our war effort in Afghanistan was half-baked. That our leadership ignored the Bin Laden threat and focused on Iraq.

Moore hates that we're going to hell in a handbasket and sacrificing the very freedoms we're allegedly bringing to the rest of the world.

What I saw on the screen wasn't anti-American, it was very American -- a petition to the govenment to redress the wrongs done in the name of the American people.

See that's the great thing about America. We can say to the Pres-Hey you suck, we don't agree with your policies.
Doesn't mean you don't love the country. Just like if you oppose the war in Iraq it doesn't mean you don't support the soldiers that are fighting in it.

You can love your country and hate the policies it has implemented. I truly think Moore loves this country, but hates the current administration.

If that makes him anti-american, Lord help us all.

From Moore's past:

He hates the current administration.

He hates the 2nd amendment to the constitution.

He hates big business - except his own.

He hates the exploitation of the common man - except his own.

He hates any expression of free speech that disagrees with his own.

By his actions, the only thing Michael Moore loves is Michael Moore.

MJames...you put it so much more succinctly than I ever could.

The scray thing is that for whatever reason, so many people think this is an exceptional piece of filmmaking.

This is so true. It has been so fascinating to see how this myth has taken root..."disagree with current policies, and you are on the side of the enemy".

an interesting editorial on this subject can be found at http://www.informingyou.com/Editorial/unamerican.html

I won't go see this film because I refuse to support Moore and is far left views. Plus the things he says about average Americans when he is in another country is horrible. I don't think Moore loves this country. I think he takes advantage of this country for his own profit.

Do you think this film is a documentary?

Personally I think the scary thing is how many people are completely comfortable having such strong convictions about a film they have not seen.

::yes:: Yep, ITA. That's why, as a rule, I don't participate in these discussions. I see them as an opportunity for people to try to make others who have different viewpoints appear dumb and uninformed. I wonder why they feel the need to do so?

I watched Bowling for Columbine this week. I found it very misleading, certainly not worthy of a documentary class. A little bias is okay but stick to the facts. I don't need to watch more of his movies to know that I'd certainly not trust them as a source of information. I'd recommend checking the facts he presented and see if you can validate them, you might find that some of the disturbing material was embellished to make the point he wanted.

The point of the movie is not to offer up the facts as gospel. It is to get you to look at things from a different angle. To get you to question, to discuss, and most of all, become involved. And not take anyone's, even MM's, version.

and PS
judging by the number of threads in here about this movie, it worked...and how can getting people to engage and discuss the issues be perceived as bad?

Then it shouldn't be being passed off as a documentary.

Does it really matter what it is called? If so, then you will be interested to learn that 9 out of 10 movie reviewers gave this documentary ( their words ) a thumbs up.
