It only took me a couple of years, but I finally 'get' vinylmation. I used to think they were kinda ridiculous and could not figure out why they were so popular and so expensive. A couple weeks ago I was thinking back to a trip I took at the end of college with my parents and I remembered seeing a lot of large (people sized) Mickey Mouse statues out in front of the Magic Kingdom. They had been designed and painted by various famous people, but were all the same shape. Thinking back, they were like gigantic vinylmations, only waaay before vinylmation came out.

Actually, a lot of cities had something along these lines. D.C. had panda bears, Myrtle Beach had horses, Richmond VA had fish, etc etc. They were designed by different people and placed throughout the cities.

I don't know if the Mickey's got placed throughout anywhere, but they were really neat. And they are the reason I 'get' vinylmation. I actually like vinyls now and have ordered one for my daughter per her birthday request.:goodvibes

The thing is...there is a particular one that she wants and I've heard that you can trade them. How does this work? My biggest problem remaining w/ vinyls is that there are certain ones I like and certain ones I really don't like. So trading would be fantastic!

Thanks for your help and for reading my 'why I understand vinylmation' essay.

You can trade at the parks. I traded a couple when I was down there in May. You can go to most merchandise shops now and look for a little plastic box with three figures in it at the counter. Any of those are able to be traded as long as you aren't adding a duplicate to the box (like pin trading) just ask the CM to switch it for you ^_^

If you like vinylmation you may like other designer toys that the craze was based on http://www.vinylpulse.com/

I can't speak definately but during my trip to WDW I noticed several stores thru all 4 parks that had a display case of 3 diff vinyls and a sign saying trade for me. So if you see one you like you would ask Cm to trade for that one and give cm one of your cast off ones in exchange. I'm sure there are also msg boards and other places to meet up with fellow collecters to swap but since I have no interest in them I couldn't direct you as to where.

When you trade, do you get the box and card of the ones you are trading for?

:confused3I still don't get it. But then, I didn't "get" beanie babies or Pokemon either...

I had heard of these things before my trip last month - and when I first arrived, saw them and hated them. Strange thing is, as the vacation went by, and I saw them more often, I came to actually like them. Didn't buy any, though - maybe next time :)

You may "clear box" trade at anytime at any shop that sells vinylmation. The card will only be available if the person who traded the doll provided it (most do not, in my experience) With the clear box you are able to pick which of the 3 dolls you would like to trade for.

There are also black numbered boxes that come out during trading times, usually an hour a day at each of the resorts and other stores that sell vinylmation. You pick a number and they open that slot and you get that "mystery doll" If you are unhappy you do have the choice of clear boxing that one. There is a limit per day on trading.

Good luck, I hope you are able to find what you are looking for. I have found the shop attached to Disney Quest to have a very friendly staff for trading.

I do like some of the designs, and see where you are coming from with the giant Mickey statues. Not the same material, but designed in similar fashions. I actually have a pin set from those big Mickeys. These Vinylmations are just too much money per piece for us to get a whole mess of them, and the fact that you can't see them in advance makes it a bummer.

I agree that they are too expensive. We won't be getting many. Just one every now and again; with trading perhaps making it easier to obtain ones that would be more meaningful. We'll be sticking to the little ones. The large ones are definitely out of price range.

Thanks for the advice! The card is something that I'd like to have, as to have the full piece that comes in the original box. The individual artists are part of what make it neat for me.

OK - I read about this on an earlier thread, and now it's great to hear from people who have actually done this! Our three boys love vinylmation, and they love the game of opening the blind box, but they have had disappointments.

So here's my question: Can they actually trade ones they bought earlier this year, or last year? Or can they only trade vinylmations that they just bought and took out of the package right there in the same store? We're surprising them with a short trip in July, so I'll need to know whether to pack all the old vinylmation for possible trading or not!

Pixarmom,

From what I've read on the Vinylnation forums, you can trade any vinylmations you want. You can trade ones that you previously purchased or ones that you just bought in the store. We are going down in October and are bringing 6 that we had left over from purchasing the entire holiday set.

I've heard that some of the more serious collectors frequent the stores in hopes of finding vinylmations available for trade that were released some time ago (thus not available in stores anymore).

Hope that helps some! :thumbsup2

Sillybands are the ones I'm hung up on... they're rubberbands... once on your arm, they don't have the cute animal shape anymore....

I come from the generation of pogs though... pieces of cardboard I got for A's on a report card/ doing special chores(not the natural weekly stuff). Guess I can't say much...
