I did it. I took the Facebook plunge. So now what?

you can set security up so that certain groups can't see your wall, but you can't show different groups a different page...for instance...you cant' post something for your college friend and have it blocked for family and then they see something different. If you block them from seeing your wall, they won't see anything you ever post on there.
I'd suggest if you have certain things you only want certain groups of people to see, to set up a group page for them. and then make it private and invite all those you want in to it. then you can post and chat with each other on there privately about things and no one else will be able to see it.

HTH.

Thank you! I just need to figure out how to do it.

Not sure what your profession is ... but be careful. I am a teacher and we have been told not to join facebook. This is a problem for me since I have 2 teenage children that have joined and I feel it is my responsibility as a parent to monitor their sites. So ... I have joined under my nickname and my maiden name.

Below is a link to a teacher that was suspended for having a picture posted on her friend's site.

I use twitter to augment my trip blog (it's very easy to embed your Tweets in your website and add content via text messaging). Facebook I joined but really don't use other than Farmville and a weather blogging site. One of my old high school friends found me via FB but that was 6 months after I joined. I had found my other old college and high school friends years before via a good old fashioned Google search.

I don't post much to my FB account because it blurs the line between friends, family and business associates badly. You can either block someone entirely from seeing your posts or have to show them everything. I despise that. But my SILs love it. They aren't very tech savvy so being able to post pictures and send little messages to friends is right up their alley.

My only advice is to be careful who you add as friends and what you post. You may find that you don't find FB as useful as the buzz claims.

I mostly a lurker on facebook.
I posted something the other day that I was taking my dh to the airport over my lunch break. Then I deleted it, because I thought, "how dumb", some stranger could read this, and figure out I would be home alone.

I don't play any games either, or get involved in causes. One of my co-workers got in trouble, because a parent logged into a game, and you can look up how much time a person spends playing a game. The parent saw that the school secretary was playing some game something like 2 hours a day.

Make sure too, your security is really set up tight. Some think it is secure, when it really isn't.

LOL I always wondered about that. People posting things about where they are, leaving for vacation, etc. (I guess they think only their "friends" can read their posts.) Facebook is famous for having their privacy settings "forget" the settings a lot...usually whenever they make a major change to the site.

I quit FB last year. I found it to be a waste of time and I realized I didn't care what people were doing every minute of the day. ("Susie is eating breakfast. Susie is leaving for work. Susie has a cold. Susie is mad.")

Thanks for sharing your stories everyone. Good info. :thumbsup2

So, with the wall, only friends can post on it right?

You can separate everything.

Under the Friends page, click create a list and separate your friends into different lists.

When you post something to your profile, click the little lock in the bottom right hand corner and you can decide who sees what by using the customize function. You can show it to only 1 specific list, or block certain lists or any combo of functions.
