I did it. I took the Facebook plunge. So now what?

DH and I have been kicking it around and we finally took the plunge. There are people we want to connect with and after looking through my older dd's Facebook and looking up people, we decided to go for it.

I set my things to private.

Any other advice from the experts to a newbie?

PS....I found my mother was on there. I mean WTH, my mother is on THERE before me!

I left Facebook about a month ago because I found it really useless... I don't know what advice I could give you other than that there's a really big Disney community there that you could definitely get involved with if you'd like to.

Be prepared to be reunited with lots of people from your past! I like that part of it! I had been trying to find my college roommate for years. I signed up for FB, ate dinner with my family, and in that amount of time my roommate had already found me!

Yeah I guess we kind of did haha. I wasn't friends with anyone from my school and even though I had like 60 friends from the Disney community alone, including yavn from VMK and Margaret Kerry, the model for Tinker Bell and John Howe, my favorite WDW Cast Member (often found in Tomorrowland in the queue for Buzz or Monsters, Inc.) I really didn't talk to anybody that much so I just decided to call it quits and become less involved with internet stuff.

But I don't know of any rookie mistakes. If you look up old friends and you want to talk to them publicly, write on their wall, but if you want to do it more privately send them a message to their inbox. Aside from that I guess it's basically just based on the relationships you have with old pals and stuff.

Okay, rookie mistake: getting involved with all the fun games and posting each and every thing you do in the game onto your profile and/or other people's profiles.

Have fun! I really enjoy connecting with old friends and making new ones. I've become extremely close with a woman I barely knew in high school. Because of Facebook, my social life is better than it's been in 15 years and that's sad.

My Mom was on facebook before me too! No real advice but enjoy. It is kind of addicting!

I mostly a lurker on facebook.
I posted something the other day that I was taking my dh to the airport over my lunch break. Then I deleted it, because I thought, "how dumb", some stranger could read this, and figure out I would be home alone.

I don't play any games either, or get involved in causes. One of my co-workers got in trouble, because a parent logged into a game, and you can look up how much time a person spends playing a game. The parent saw that the school secretary was playing some game something like 2 hours a day.

Make sure too, your security is really set up tight. Some think it is secure, when it really isn't.

BE CAREFUL!!!! I have a virus protector & still lost EVERYTHING!!! All I did was check to see who was looking into my profile & bang! It said I was looking into other peoples & my friend quickly told me run the anti-virus scanner & unplug everything-change passwords-etc. Now I barely go on it...

Yup. Be very careful with the applications out there. They make them look neat (like seeing who views your profile - which you can't do) and when you agree to use the application, it gives you a virus.

Excellent advice. I know a few of my FB friends who fell for that "who is looking at my profile" thing

I really enjoy FB. It's Twitter that I can't figure out , but FB has allowed me to re-connect with a few people I haven't seen in 20+ years. I'm enjoying "talking" to them again!

My dd's have shown me the YOUTUBE site that makes fun of Farmville. I don't think I could do Farmville right now.

but this wasn't FB's fault...it was yours....all of those kinds of applications are spam...There has never been and is not anything you can use to see who all views your page or anything that will give you free stuff for games(except from the game itself).

to the OP...have fun...I have been on FB since college(about 6 and half years now) and love it...it's such a great way to keep in touch with friends and family all across the country and the world!

you can set security up so that certain groups can't see your wall, but you can't show different groups a different page...for instance...you cant' post something for your college friend and have it blocked for family and then they see something different. If you block them from seeing your wall, they won't see anything you ever post on there.
I'd suggest if you have certain things you only want certain groups of people to see, to set up a group page for them. and then make it private and invite all those you want in to it. then you can post and chat with each other on there privately about things and no one else will be able to see it.
