I couldn't tell my kids they weren't going to Disney

Hi,
I've not visited for ages now but tonight I couldn't resist it. I thought I'd share with you all how I felt about telling the kids they may not be going to Disney this year. We've gone every year since 99 -apart from the millenium. Because of work and the expense this IS the first year I have considered not going. Then I mentioned it to my son and daughter. They took it really well. My daughter said " We are lucky, we have been lots of times. Some people never get to go" That made me feel a lot better even though I knew we'd all miss the experience terribly.

Now for the good news................I went out and booked it on Friday!! I couldn't not go and the looks on their faces to think they weren't going to knowing they were going was worth it.

I know we will all appreciate it that bit more this Summer and perhaps not take the experience for granted..................

True, but Spain doesn't cost as much as WDW. We are tied to school holidays because of my work so only manage WDW every 3 or 4 years. Even then I think we're fortunate to be able to take our kids as often as that.

I just wish we had known before our first visit that a "once in a lifetime trip" just doesn't exist.

I know what you mean Libby, last year after my husband suffered a serious stroke we decided to go for that "once in a lifetime" holiday to WDW. The inital cost for flights, hotel, car etc. in September was actually less than Lanzarote in August the year before. Of course you then have park tickets and shopping on top, but food was much cheaper. We loved it so much we're scraping together to go again in september this year (we were there for Hurricane Frances last time so fingers crossed we don't get another one this time, mind you there were no queues for anything so thats a good thing!).
Something like this with your health makes you realise its the fun experiences as a family that matters most.

Auds35 you must have 2 very well brought up kids to take the possibility of no WDW so responsibly, Well done to you!

Thanks for your replies. I totally agree with the 'not a once in a lifetime experience'. I know the kids appreciate the opportunity to go to Disney but it's good to know that others have similar issues to face when the mention of 'Disney this year' crops up. Thank you. Have a great holiday!

MY HUSBAND HAS HAD 4 MINI STROKES IN MAY 2005.WE HAVE NOW BOOKED TO STAY AT THE AKL AND CASTLEDOUBLETREE ON IDRIVE BOTH FOR A WEEK IN OCT 2005.I THINK THIS WILL MAKE NOT A ONCE IN A LIFETIME HOLIDAY BUT A VERY SPECIAL ONE IN DEED.AT 37 &32 YEARS OF AGE I HOPE WE DONT LOOK 2 SILLY ON DUMBOS RIDE!!!.ANYONE KNOW HOW WE CAN UPGRADE TO CONCIERGE LEVEL AT AKL?.WE HAVE BEEN TOLD WE CANT DO IT TILL WE GET THERE AS WE HAVE BOOKED THROUGH TCD?.WE HAVE ALREADY BOOKED A TURRETT ROOM IN CASTLE DOUBLETREE WHICH WE COULD UPGRADE BEFORE WE WENT?

Glad that you're going to be able to take the kids after all. When are you off? How excited were they when you told them?

NicknSara - sorry to hear about your hubby. I am sure your trip will be very magical and all the more special. I've never stayed at AKL let alone tried to upgrade but have you tried faxing or e-mailing to explain the situation and see if they can help?

Yes We Have Tried And Disney Told Us That Becuase Tcd Made The Reservation We Dont Exist Yet?,if That Makes Sense.its Justablock Booking On Behalf Of Tcd.i May Try Again When We Have Paid Oure Money.after That I Guess The Booking Will Change To Oure Name?i Tried Tcd And They Have No Deal To Cover Concierge,so A Bit Stuck Really?

How lovely that you're going agin and must be extra special to know your kids appreciate the fact that its going to be a struggle this year, I think it does no harm to let our kids know how lucky they are, my son has travelled a lot (usually go abroad 3 or 4 times a year) but I never let him lose sight of the fact that there are kids in his school who have never been anywhere, their parents either can't afford it or don't deem it necessary to spend their money on holidays, he does appreciate it tho' so I'm very lucky.

Next year will be our 1st trip. We are saving like mad and the kids know that too.

My youngest, 6, asked for money for his birthday to take to WDW...Ahhhh.... The children have all been told that we have to really save hard.

What really scares me is all you Disneymaniacs who confirm that it's not a "once in a lifetime" trip. Ouch..........

Once you go you have to return .......

My son is 7 in august and wants dollars! A few rellies and friends did this last year and he thought it was great - it also stops them spending it before you go! My two also like to take their savings out of the bank and to the post office to change to dollars themselves, just before we go.

We've been letting our kids save their pocket money for holidays and giving them a bit extra when they've been helping round the house. They've loved watching their savings grow and like others they'll change this themselves into dollars.

Squiffy a lot of people on these boards do go yearly or more (how lucky are they?!) but not everyone does. Our last trip was a week in October 2003 and this coming one will be for 17 days BUT we'll be very unlikely to go again before 2007.

Ooops now I'm seriously thinking we've moved away from Auds 35 original thread.
