Here's my two cents...
Relationships especially in the beginning should be easy. By that I mean you should each know where each other stands. Nobody should be left wondering who is feeling what. But that does come with maturity.
As for the hormonal thing. Yeah it could be and if it is severe mood swings then I would suggest you rethink wanting to be in a relationship with her. I would be concerned about her use of painkillers too. That could be making her moody too.
I have a very good friend who has severe PMS and she has lost one marriage over it already, has a stressed relationship right now, and is also on medical leave from work because of it. It has put a strain on our friendship at times.
