I can't believe that he treated the store clerk this way

Hi,

I was at the mall yesterday and stopped at a Discovery Center store to just look around. There was a guy in there asking one of the clerks what he thought a 9 year old buy would like. He showed him chemisty sets, and models, and stuff that a 9 year old would really love for Christmas and all the guy did was criticize what the clerk was showing him. Finally the clerk got fed up with him and said something about showing him everything in the store that a 9 year old would like and if nothing works then maybe he should go elsewhere and the clerk went on to another customer.

People can be so rude especially at holiday time.

I've seen it before. There are some people whom you can never please, no matter how much you try to help them. Sounds like the salesperson handled it tactfully.

It was kind of funny, because the customer looked around knowing that he had just made a huge scene infront of everyone and kind of hurried out of there, and once he left there were a few people claping for the clerk. I don't blame the clerk at all for finally getting fed up and he did tell the guy nicely about it.

It drives me crazy when people are so rude!

My daughter's friend works at Media Play, and she knows she's nearly out of a job since they are closing soon. She said people in the last week have been especially nasty. I'd feel bad, considering you KNOW all the clerks are losing their jobs.

Sounds like the clerk did do a wonderful job with the situation. What is wrong with people?

The other night I had a customer come to my register from another line and place her coffee pot on top of the stuff that another customer was buying. I wasn't sure what to say so I just stood there and looked at her with a shocked look on my face. Finally my first customer came back and was a little confused too. The coffee pot woman kept looking at her watch. Well I wasn't going to stop what I was in the middle of to make her life a little easier. Gee.

SunFloridaDisney,

I am sure they were complaining that the discounts weren't enough since they were going out of business.

chell,

I have seen that before as well. Someone will have stuff on the counter, turn around to get a pack of gum and someone will walk right past them and move the other person's stuff back. I have no idea why some think it's ok to do this and then they act shocked when the other person brings it to there attention.

I work part time in a kitchen/cooking store...the following happens regularly, especially during the holidays:

Customer: I need a gift for my __________
Me: okay do they like to bake or cook?
Customer: neither
Me: okay, well we have a lot of wonderful food items right now
Customer: no, I don't think they would like that
Me: hand soaps and lotions, cookbooks? (all the while I am leading them around the store showing my suggestions
Customer: no, maybe I'll get a gift card

now this is what I will get after Christmas

Customer: my ___________ gave me this gift card for Christmas, I hate to cook, can I cash it out
Me: no, I'm afraid not, but maybe something at our sister store will interest you, our cards are good there too
Customer: fine, I'll check!

meanwhile both occasions the customers have a cell phone in their ear trying to hold two conversations at once.

4 years now, never a dull moment

Alice's Mom,

See I love cooking and would love to get a gift card from a place like where you work. I could spend a couple hours just looking at cookware.

Then don't EVER get a job in one of those places. I spend so much time "shopping" when I am running a cash register. :flower: I love to cook to so I love seeing all the new merch we get in. But I think at this point I am paying them to let me work there. :rotfl2:

chell,

That's why I am happy that I have a nice office job, where we don't have to mess with after Christmas returns and stuff like that. I had enough of that working at Wal-Mart during highschool and college.

The other night a customer told me that if she could afford it she would get a part time job there, I thought that was pretty funny

Back to the OP's original intent on the thread, I think people just want someone to show them something that "speaks" to them as if we know that perfect gift for complete strangers.

A nice office job is the way to go for me too but for the holidays this year I decided to take a part-time retail job for some extra Christmas money and for some vacation money. That can't happen if I keep spending it at the store though.

I think the shoppers tonight and tomorrow will be very interesting. I'll have to remember to come back to let you all know if there are many crazies around here.

My favorite part of Christmas retail was the men who showed up on Christmas Eve, slapped $200 bucks on the counter and said "Here, pick out something my wife would like that costs this much."

As if all women were completely interchangable.

I know this is supposed to be the happiest time of the year but man, some customers are just plain rude! When I worked in retail this was the time of year I dreaded. Not because of the lines, those made the day go faster. It was because of all the rude people. Especially when an item was sold out, the customer would act like I was puposely hiding them in the storage room just so they couldn't buy it. I guess it was my personal goal in life to make customers mad.

All I know is, just wait until Monday. Then you will hear every excuse in the book as to why they are entiled to return the item without a receipt.

BenJen,

I love this time of year. I confuse people that I'm so happy. I love when it gets busy. The shoppers sometimes don't know what to make of a happy salesperson/manager!

I just smile all the while myself still providing the best customer service possible, and this year I was helping a customer who turned out to be a corporate employee and asked for my email because they always need happy, energetic, enthusiastic people in merchandising and for asst. buyers! I have been loyal for 4 years so that I could eventually get a corporate position. He has already emailed me...I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch, but I am sure hoping for them...no customer can get me down this season.

What's even better is when they look at you and say "She's exactly your size."

Well, you know when she comes back to return whatever he bought she's going to be either 30 pounds heavier or 30 pounds lighter than you and at least a foot taller and four Bra sizes away! :rotfl2:

I'm soooo glad I don't work retail any more. It wasn't so bad before Christmas, just really busy. But the 26th was when all the meanies who didn't get their Christmas wishes came to return their presents. :scared:
