I cannot decide - DLH or GCH? Help!

So, I thought I was really happy with my decision to stay at the DLH. We will be there from October 5-8 ("we" is my husband, my two kids - ages 5 and 3, and me). We decided to stay Concierge Level and we got a really good deal.

However, after reading the boards, it seems like I maybe made the wrong choice?!? I think we could afford to stay Concierge Level at the GCH (if we don't take any other major vacations for awhile!).

I originally chose the DLH because I know the rooms are bigger and the pool seems more fun for kids. But maybe the other "pros" of the GCH outweigh the smaller rooms and not-as-themed pool? Having a balcony seems great, the separate entrance would be nice...etc.

I would love some opinions about this.

Thanks!

I have stayed both. Oops, I mean DLH. I love both. The thing about the DLH is that the grounds are great for the kids. Thay have these great water cave (Falls I guess you can call them) but also thay have a really nice walking path that has wooden disney characters throughout that I thought were really cute.

Either choice, you won't go wrong. I loved the GCH over Thanks Giving. They had Santa there in the lobby for Pictures. They had story time for the kids inthe evening. Loved it.

I've never done concierge, but have stayed at both. With your kids' ages, I'd pick the DLH.

It all depends on what you are looking for.

For the service aspect of it, we LOVE the Grand.

We just seem to get a little extra pixie dust in service everytime we stay there.

We enjoy DLR, but just love the pampering we get at the Grand that that is where we have stayed at the last 5 times we have gone.

I've stayed at both and I'd say that DLH is more kid friendly than GCH, especially the pool and the activities around the hotel. It also saves you some money so you can splurge on meals/souvenirs !

Just a little pause for acronym education:

DLH - Disneyland Hotel
GCH - Grand Californian Hotel
DLR - Disneyland Resort (which includes DLH, PPH, GCH, DTD and both parks)

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. . .

Well, you and your family wouldn't have a BAD time at any of the three Disney hotels, actually, and Paradise Pier has a nice Surfer Goofy statue in the lobby for photo taking. I prefer GCH for location and the overall ambience of it, but I tend to concur with the others here. If you have kids with you, THEY would probably prefer DLH for the pool area alone. There are cute Mickey toiletries in the DLH rooms, which you don't get at GCH. The beds are not as high in DLH rooms as they are in GCH rooms! Plus, Goofy's Kitchen is right there in DLH, and I think kids tend to like that a little better than Storytellers over in GCH. GCH would be good for you if you guys have the need to retreat to the room mid-day for rest and relaxation and package- drop off, then you could just get back to Disneyland in a few footsteps, whereas DLH is a little further away, and while not a long walk, it can SEEM long to those who are tired and cranky in one's group. I have stayed at all three. I like all three for different reasons, but we definitely got the most accomplished when we stayed at GCH because of the ease in coming back to the room, going back out, coming back in, etc. We were able to get quality rest time, and walking back into the park for my achy-footed friends did not seem so daunting from the GCH, but when we went back to PPH or DLH, I could not get anyone to go out again! They wouldn't leave the room! So, you kind of have to weigh convenience & ambience=extra money vs. fun pool and cute Mickey toiletries=less money!

And as far as the entrance from the GCH, all three DLR hotels are able to use this....

Thanks so much for all of the advice. Exactly what I was looking for - keep it coming!!

Thanks also for the acronym clarification - all those letters get jumbled in my sleep-deprived brain sometimes :rolleyes1

Oh, and another plus on the DLH side besides the Peter Pan-themed pool (even though I still prefer GCH!) is the cool waterfall and the koi fish pond. I know they used to have feeding times for the fish that people could watch, or maybe even participate in, but I don't know if they still do that publicly. And you can walk behind the waterfall and get a little spray on you from the mist - your kids might like that.

DLH is definitely geared towards children, so I'd agree with those that recommend that one because you're traveling with children. If you were going just with adults, DCH would be the better choice.

Ooo and also there is a great room for the kids to watch Disney movies. I personally have never been in there, but I've see pictures of it and it looks so cool !

Keep your DLH ressies for now since you got a great rate, see how it is when you go, and then decide DLH vs GCH for the next trip to DLR.

I love the GCH but have to say the DLH has some really nice features. You are guaranteed some sort of third bed. Either a daybed or a rollaway (rollaways are free at the DLH). The GCH has some daybed rooms, some bunkbed rooms and neither of those are guaranteed. If you don't get one, than you get a sleeping bag. And the bunkbeds are not full length twin beds, so older kids won't fit in those. If you have three kids or kids that can't sleep in the same bed, this makes the DLH's offerings really nice!

The DLH also has lots of grounds and things for kids to explore. As others have said, it has the koi ponds and waterfalls, a totally separate quiet pool that has a large sandy volleyball court, small sand area at the main pool, an arcade (GCH has no arcade, some kids like to save their quarters for this), and it also has the remote control jungle cruise boats. My kids love those. I think as far as main pools the two hotels are about even. The Neverland Pool has the Peter Pan theming. However, the GCH pool is right next to a theme park, at night the lights of the Sun Wheel and other Paradise Pier sections of DCA are so pretty and you just feel like you are right there. Because you are! The DLH's pool does have more in the way of landscaping and the completely separate Cove Pool is a nice feature. The GCH has three pools, but they are all joined together as I recall. I have been in the heat of summer at both hotels, and they both get crowded in the afternoon. I didn't find one better or worse on the crowd fron as far as the main pools. Having the separate quiet pool at the DLH is nice, it does generally stay pretty quiet. I think a lot of people don't even realize its there.

The DLH rooms are large and bright. However, the GCH rooms have balconies and have a much more deluxe feel. Nicer linens, towels, turndown service, the whole place feels very much like an upscale resort. It has the spa too which is nice for the adults. But for a kid oriented trip to Disneyland, the DLH is awfully nice. And much cheaper.

I don't think you can make a bad choice. I tend to go with the DLH, even though I use DVC points and the GCH isn't that much higher "cost" on that front. We just love the DLH's room size and bed arragnement and the whole place (esp. the grounds) really make our family feel like we landed right smack dab in the magic. My daughter loves to fall asleep at night to the glow in the dark pixie dust wall paper at the DLH. I love the craftsmen style of the GCH but that was lost on my kids! They did really love the GCH however, and never one time missed the DLH. But for the next trip when I asked where they wanted to stay, they both said the DLH.

Someday, dh and I will go just the two of us and do a week at the GCH. Do the spa, Napa Rose, all of that. Until then, its the DLH which doesn't feel at all like a bad compromise!

Thanks so much for all of your great descriptions!

Where is the separate quiet pool at the DLH? Is it a kiddie pool?

The quiet pool at the DLH is called the Cove Pool. It's a swimming pool located in another part of the hotel grounds, away from the Neverland Pool and all the action, which is why it's called the quiet pool.....it's in a quieter area.

Here's a few pics of the Cove Pool.

Also, I want to mention that if you have children who can't swim on their own, or without a lifejacket, they won't be allowed to go down the big slides at the DLH or the GCH. Lifeguards at these hotels will make kids take a small swim test if they question their swimming capabilites, and if they can't at least dog paddle on their own, they won't be allowed to use the slides. (And they don't allow kids to wear lifejackets on the slides.)

However, non-swimmers are allowed to use the big slide at the Paradise Pier Hotel because it empties into a shallow catch-trough instead of into a pool.

Here's an overhead shot of the Paradise Pier pool slide and kiddie pool.

Anyway, I agree with what others are saying. The DLH would be a lot of fun for your kiddos, and the rooms are more family friendly.:thumbsup2

The quiet pool has a sand beach.

I have not been a big fan of the dlh based on our experience in 2002 there. However, I spoke with a friend who just stayed there. She said that they got to stay in a renovated room and that the pool wasn't overcrowded when she was there. It sounded really nice now.

More great info - thank you!!

The Cove Pool looks perfect for my learning-to-swim kids.

Do they have small water slides at the larger DLH pool? Or only the big ones?
