and the stink is unbelievable. The popcorn directions on this pkg said do not use the popcorn button.......but put it in for four minutes......so ding dong that I am did that...a little less actually.....and then I open the door of the microwave and the smoke pours out.......I have the windows opened even though it is chilly out...(read that as 40 degrees) I have microwave opened to air out......STINK

Ugh, my SiL did that one time at our place while she was babysitting for us. We came home to the most awful smell. It seems like it lingered for awhile too unfortunately.

We always pop popcorn by hearing -- when the popping stops, we shut the microwave off, no matter how much time has gone by.

try wiping down the microwave with a 2:1 solution of white vineger and water. That may help reduce the lingering smell in the microwave.

that's a horrible smell and a pain to get rid of. It just lingers and makes me feel sick to my stomach. Burn some candles while you wipe the microwave down.

Cook some tuna fish in it...It will cover that burnt popcorn smell real well. :teeth:

I hate it when anyone burns popcorn in my microwave. That stinky smell hangs around for a long time :(

An uncle ruined his sister in-law's microwave because he burnt popcorn, almost caught the microwave on fire. :earseek:

Was it one of those "halloween" small bags?

I read that too and did not listen to it. Our popcorn button is only 1 1/2 mins. I think those directions are for older microwaves.

As far as the smell, here is the "hints from heloise" site suggestion.
Burnt Popcorn Smell in the Microwave
To get rid of this awful lingering stink, fill as large microwave-safe bowl with one cup of water and sprinkle your favorite spice like cinnamon or add several drops of vanilla or lemon extract. Bring to a boil. You must let it sit inside for 10 to 15 minutes to cool down. Simply wipe the walls down with paper towels. Leave the door open to further air it out.

thanks everyone for the ideas......I think though I may IGNORE the tuna fish one.....hahaha

The last time one of us really burned the popcorn in the microwave, we ended up pitching the microwave and getting a new one. It was that bad!!

That odor makes you wish you had stopped us sinuses, doesn't it? It only takes a few too many microwave seconds to make it go from :) to :crazy2:

Nothig worse than popcorn stink!

Heat some white vineger and water in a measuring cup in your mw till boiling. Let sit for l0 min.

wipe down microwave.

Shake some baking soda on a paper plate and let sit ovenright in mw.

herc.

I keep a small bowl of vanilla in my microwave all the time and never notice any food smells.

bleck....reminds me of a co-worker I had years ago who loved burned popcorn from the microwave. I smelled that stench every day. :crazy2:

There's a job I don't miss one bit.

Someone in my office building (another company) burned the popcorn so badly that the fire alarms went off.

People at my own work burned the popcorn so much the fire department had come out twice because we set the alarm off. It was so bad that the owner of the building said that our business was going to get billed for the fire departments trips out. Needless to say, our worked 'banned popcorn' until we bought a new microwave.
